WHY IS MY STORE OPEN TILL MIDNIGHT IT IS TOO DANGEROUS (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by amwest6
I work at a cafe store at a popularly visited outdoor shopping mall in SoCal. We close at 12 am Friday-Sunday and 11 pm for the rest of the week. Tonight a homeless guy unloaded every tiny valuable he has in his backpacks onto the table he was sitting at and ignored all out my closing warnings. He had a bunch of weird shit sitting out from coins, tickets, a variety of cords, mini blow torch, whatever. I didn't lock finally till 15 mins past closing. I was furious. As much as my experience has taught me, it is hard to handle some of these mentally ill individuals who stay posted up in our stores all day and night, some with better intentions than others when they come in. I do not like having to call security but he would not listen to me one bit and it was like halfway into my close and management expects us out on time for labor cuts. All he reacted by was with disgruntled muttering and curses at us. Then he sits at the closest table to our exit. I am just so drained from these holidays and just needed to rant.

Yikes that is an extremely awful take you have there. As some one who was homeless it is really disturbing and disappointing to see people not care about their fellow man.

Yea it sucks to clean up after people but this isn't about self respect most people don't choose to be homeless

Yea but they choose to make a mess and then not clean it up. That's the point. No one is bashing homeless people in general.

Both the op and a commenter did state that it is a "danger" and or a "self respect" thing to cater to the homeless.

When in a high volume city many of the homeless arent just down on their luck, many have mental illnesses that CAN make them dangerous. It's not their fault its not the employees fault it just is what it is due to the lack of government help.

When you witness enough people with mental illnesses act threatening or scary it's fine to proceed with caution or view them as potential danger.

You're generalizing things so you can be upset...

Also the fact that you made an account on reddit today to complain about the homeless is also a big yikes

First of all, homeless people are not defaulted to “mentally ill individuals.” Secondly, where was the danger? The blow torch? His coins? I carry around mace to protect myself—am I dangerous? Is a homeless person not allowed to protect themselves when they’re carrying everything they own on their back? Is he dangerous because he posed a threat? Or is it because he’s tired, homeless and “mentally ill?” Sorry you had to stay 15 minutes late because of this criminal.

Next time that happens, call the police. This is trespassing. This will help keep you safe and will also force your manager to see a police report about this situation. They may not listen to you, but they must listen to the police.
