green bean here. my store has been insanely busy this holiday season (as most stores are) and because of that i've been seriously neglected in bar training. i started the first week of december and i've been on bar only 4 times. and i work 5 days a week! today i asked for some bar time since we were slow and i want to learn. out of nowhere we get slammed and i'm visibly anxious and frustrated because i'm not going fast enough. my SSV tells me she's going to need me to go a little faster. i have to look at the cup and think about what i'm going to do, it's not just natural for me yet. she told me i shouldn't have asked for bar time if i didn't want it, and sent to register. i tried so hard to hold it in but i couldn't help but cry while ringing up customers, embarrassing myself further. finally when we slowed down i took a few seconds in the back to try and gather myself. i know i was being a burden and slowing everything down but i'm never going to get better if i can't practice. i'm just so frustrated right now, this is the first time so far that i'm questioning my career here. *sigh*

It happens to all green beans, but she should have had a nicer attitude and instead of kicking you out. Just got another person to step in with you so it was less stress and taking the less amount of time. Sorry! We’ve all been through our first cries!

As holidays are starting to calm down I've started putting new hires on bar again during our slower hours. It's super stressful for everyone, but it's a team effort to better our other partners that way it's easier to flex the play if need be.
The important part is the effort and drive to do your best to improve every day. If you're doing that you're doing great. Keep up the good work.
Side note, it's okay for your supervisor to ask more from you just because it's part of their job to make sure the standards are being upheld. (even though everyone is most often giving it their all). I personally find it really hard to ask more of people and only do it when people are literally doing nothing or are on their phones all the time. HOWEVER, the way your supervisor went about taking you off bar when it got busy is super uncalled for. I would have told you to switch with me while I catch us up and if it slowed down again put you back. Telling you not to ask for bar time is pretty uncalled for and I'm sure the stress was getting to said supervisor. Probably not personal, but should probably be confronted/brought up to your SM or another partner.

I’m still in training and I start my 4th day today, bar training has also been a mess for me. I had maybe an hour on hot bar training and it was super confusing, day 2 I learned cold bar and support...kinda, it was a bit easier and I enjoyed it way more but I do still feel like I’m constantly messing something up or slowing someone down all because I just can seem to get it down. It sucks but everyone at my store has been really chill about it and they help me out. If you don’t feel like your getting the support you need, say something to your shift! If your shift doesn’t help go to the sm! I hope everything pans out for you hon!

As someone who also had the bulk of their training during the holiday madness, I am surprised by your strength. You had a cry but you stayed there, did what you could to compose yourself, and got right back at it. I would've had to go home. Learning bar isn't something to sneeze at, and the insensitivity if your SSV was uncalled for. It's easy to forget how hard training is when someone's use to a job, but it's always easy to be kind.
This subreddit is a great place for support, but it's also a great place to ask questions and get information from someone who isn't going to look down on you for asking.
Your experience was tough, but try and remember that that was the worst of it. You never have to go through a rush like that again. Sure, you'll HAVE rushes, but you'll have the experience and the training. This is the worst of it, and you got through it. Hats off to ya!

Babygirl or babyboy you don’t want to be in bar these days believe me, it’s a nightmare even for fast baristas, wait for summer and spring you’ll be grateful you waited, also I started like that and was ONLY put in register I asked my SM to put me in bar and always made sure I was were the deployment card had me every shift bc shifts like to make their lives easier and put people where they’re better so they don’t have to hustle at all.

So is spring and summer better?
jarojasa1 points3y ago
Definitely, and ask your manager to be put in bar during slow hours and rush hours in summer which are slow compared to winter/spring you’ll turn really fast and confident

Your ssv should absolutely not have spoken to you like that, if any of my shifts spoke to a new partner in a way that discouraged them from learning bar I would be livid. You need to learn, and you will! You showed initiative in asking for bar training (which btw you shouldn't have to), if I were you I would have a conversation with your SM or another ssv you can trust about being put on the schedule for bar training

I consider myself a green bean even though I’ve been there for almost 3 months. This is my first job that isn’t retail so I’m still very confused. I suck at bar because I also have to stop and think, so I’m pretty slow.
Just chiming In that you’re definitely NOT alone. I’m frustrated too, but closing shifts are usually much slower at my store, so I find that’s a good time to practice bar.
