So my friend/coworker (who is an SSV) is having some really serious family issues. She’s trying to get time off to go and be with her family because it’s really bad, BUT my manager told her she can’t leave unless she finds coverage. I understand finding coverage is ideal, but my SSV recently moved from another state so she doesn’t have many connections, no other SSV’s at our store can cover for her bc they’ve maxed out, and being with her dying family member is the priority. Plus, she’s pretty much a model employee. She’s never called in sick, she’s always shown up for her shifts, and she’s even covered shifts during her vacation time. Despite these things, my manager has basically told her that if she can’t find coverage she doesn’t get the time off and will be fired. At this point, I don’t know how to help her. What should she do? The whole situation doesn’t really seem to fit Starbucks’ values...

Have her contact the Partner Resource Contact Center 1 (866) 504-7368 and fill them in. She may be asked to take a LOA, but that will depend on the DM and PRCC recommendation. PLEASE have her contact the PRCC and/or Ethics and Compliance to start a paper trail in case your manager tries to do anything shady, do not trust that your DM is going to be on her side.

So look into our sick pay policy. Dying family members, if they’re direct relatives, merit time off I believe.

That’s the thing, my manager won’t let her use sick time or any time off whatsoever without coverage.

Yeah, that’s genuinely not legal. PRCC told me when I contacted them that you are not responsible for finding coverage when using sick time. Definitely call them to speak with them.
