Martha... that’s not a Cappuccino (i.redd.it)

I had a guy do this in drive thru and everyone with a headset paused with a grin and looked to me and I was like “... a venti cappuccino with NO foam?” And he confirmed happily as can be and I looked to my friend Hannah and she just slowly shakes her head so I just sent him on to the window. Sometimes it ain’t worth the ten minute battle to explain someone’s drink doesn’t exist. 😂💔

Um... Can it please be worth it to ELI5? I'd appreciate it.

Most people don’t like being corrected on how they order things. We’re trained to just roll with it.

But also, a cappuccino is, by definition, espresso with milk and lots of foam. A latte is espresso with milk and a little foam.

Thank you. I know that I tend to have to concentrate to place an order. So if I mess up something, I have to start over. I've practiced enough that questions in the middle no longer throw me off as much.

Would you like to know the difference in drink types or have things explained to you when ordering?
ladyelenawf 4 points 3y ago
I've tried to do my research so I can get my diabetes in a cup without making y'all's day too hard. So I don't really pay much attention to other drinks. And, honestly, every batista in store explains things differently. I've been instructed how to order on here, only to get to the store & be told something completely different. 🤷‍♀️ I finally messed around in the app until I figured it out.

Sorry, I rambled. I guess I just don't understand why a cappuccino without foam can't exist. I mean don't you just leave off the foam?

So there are two basic espresso drinks everyone orders. A latte and a cappuccino.

A latte is (approximately) 20% espresso, 70% steamed milk and 10% foam on top. Making a latte without foam is no problem.

A cappuccino is (again, approx) 20% espresso, 70% foam, and 10% steamed milk.

So if they wanted no foam in their cappuccino, they want a latte. Probably what happens is they’re used to getting “cappuccinos” at gas stations, which are actually “lattes” (still questionable if they are lattes), and get frustrated when they get a drink with all foam.

It can, it's mostly just that we are passionate about our coffee and in tradition a cappuccino is more foam... But as has been highlighted by the 2 other responses, there isn't a clear amount it should be foam. At my store we happily ring you in for no foam and then just shrug our shoulders, we know what you want. In theory this would leave the cup a third empty though, if you just removed the foam from a cappuccino

The mixture of foam and milk is what makes a cappuccino a cappuccino. If you leave of the foam, it's not a cappuccino anymore but a (wet) latte.

A cappuccino is, essentially, 80% foam, 15% steamed milk and 5% espresso. A latte is 90% steamed milk, 5% foam, 5% espresso. A cappuccino is meant to be frothy and light. It should feel like air when you pick up the cup.

If you don't want the frothy, airy drink that is a cappuccino, just order a latte. That's why it makes no sense to order a "cappuccino with no foam." You're essentially ordering a latte.

Bonus fact, a cappuccino with flavour at Starbucks will come with one less pump of syrup!

1 shot in a tall cup coming right up! And friendly tip when you pickup... It would've been cheaper if you just rung in a solo espresso in a tall cup Martha. No need to thank me Martha, you are so welcome and, no no, thank you!

Sometimes people come back after ordering a cappuccino and demand more coffee and I’m so tired of having to explain what the drink is and more coffee means charging for more shots unless they want a latte instead.
diaphanoussoul 5 points 3y ago
This made me laugh a lot 😆
--__uwu__-- 4 points 3y ago
Who rang that in lmao
quicksilver1349 16 points 3y ago
See, then you’d have to tell Martha she was wrong. And personally, I’m not gonna be the barista that says it.

millenniumgirldev 2 points 3y ago
So, you want a a quarter cup of latte.
nibox72 2 points 3y ago
A customer who ordered that told me she truly believed it tasted different than a latte
elphie2007 2 points 3y ago

I believe (at least at Tarbucks where I work) it comes up like maybe $0.30 cheaper to get the same size cappuccino vs latte. It's one of those "starbucks hacks" people use to save money and think they are god damn con artists cheating the system. Congrats Karen you saved some pennies and looked like an idiot, we know what you were doing.
