finally got the balls to yell back at a customer today (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by delidoll
this probably 55 year old woman came through the drive thru and ordered an iced 12 pump vanilla latte...the girl on drive is still relatively new and forgot to put the 12 pumps in and just hit vanilla. The lady had our barista (another middle aged woman) remake the drink twice until she came into the store and slammed her drinks down and started yelling at the barista in front of everybody in the cafe. She was belittling her and telling her “it’s really not that hard” and all this other stuff. I was already in a bad mood and watching a grown ass adult throw a fit over coffee sent me over the edge. I have literally never been anything but respectful to customers when they get upset but I couldn’t do it today. I stepped in and told her we will remake her drink but she needs to be respectful and we will be respectful in return and people make mistakes. I held eye contact with her and didn’t back down and it was terrifying but I did it. She walked away without saying anything (bc clearly she couldn’t handle it being given back to her) and I went in the back to vent to one of my coworkers/friends. When she left the barista on bar came back and said she didn’t pay for her drink (she hadn’t paid in drive bc it wasn’t right) because according to her “it was ridiculous that she had to get it remade three times and she’s not paying for it”. Which is theft. By the way. I wish i would’ve stayed out there and told her I was calling the police if she left without paying. I would’ve been more than happy to give her a recovery card for the next time she came in if she was nicer but she wasn’t. My shift told me he was proud of me for standing up for a fellow barista in a respectful way. I find it ridiculous that I, a 20 year old college girl, had to tell a grown ass woman to essentially quit acting like a toddler. I’m tired of being treated like shit by people. At this point I don’t even care if I get fired next person that wants to come in with some attitude is getting that same treatment right back. I’m over being the public’s punching bag.

I love this. Imagine if we all just agreed to stop enabling rude entitled customers.

honestly it’s what needs to happen...be careful with wording if you care about being fired (lol) but don’t be scared to put people in their place. We aren’t paid to be verbally abused we’re paid to make drinks.

Exactly! You are providing a service, you are not servants.

My old manager once said that it was our third place too, and that’s the energy that I’m keeping with me. There’s a difference between assuming good intent and tolerating verbal harassment. Not to mention that somebody pitching a fit ruins the experience for the other customers.

Nobody even needs 12 pumps of syrup in anything tf

The other day I got a grande no whip no foam 195F hot chocolate with 12 mocha and 5 vanilla. Yes, there was a crabby crazy person waiting at the hand-off plane.

Reading that made my teeth hurt😫

I am very, very proud of you. I WISH I could do this, but unfortunately I’m one of those who gets so angry they cry, and that probably wouldn’t go down well with a Karen. THANK YOU for giving us the courage to stand up for ourselves and our friends. I hope it gets better one day (it will), and you find a job you truly love ❤️

You did everything right. Having someone come up to you and say "i wanted this iced" or "my drink is [wrong]" without so much as a please and thank you is one thing, but no matter what sbux says, its not in our job description to be blatantly disrespected/belittled, and we are not expected to take that shit lying down.

Good job, sticking up for your fellow baristas. If all levels of management were a little more like you, the company would be a better place to work in

so my mom works at a bank and she gets horrific customers and she tells me how she has to to set them in their place and remind them that she will not be disrespected and cussed at or yelled out because they don’t want to comply, and it just makes me want to tell our customers that too and i’m so proud of you for standing up for your partner like that. one day maybe i’ll be able to do the same
Bpluvsmusic 7 points 3y ago
Sounds like you were still respectful. You were firm and assertive but didn’t drop to cussing them out or anything. That’s a perfect response!
brotherincharms 7 points 3y ago
I’m a very polite person but the moment you raise your voice the gloves come off. Call me biased or confrontational but you did the right thing.

Our third place discussion this season told us we need to be respectfully setting boundaries with rude and disrespectful customers. I think you handled the situation really well, we cant allow people to be abusing baristas. Good job, the siren is proud!
spromari 3 points 3y ago
i’m all about this. if customers are gonna cut ppl heads off over coffee, they better be prepared to get fired on. it’s a shame that abuse of service workers is baked in to consumer culture the way it is. well done, i enjoyed reading this.

I feel this.
I do my best to be respectful. But if they’re being rude, I’ll be short. I’ve never experienced a customer being this bad before, so kudos to you! You did awesome.

I did have someone yell at me when I was on DTO. They pulled up , I greeted them and they went “Hold on!” So I was like “no problem! Let me know if you have any questions!” No kidding, the customer literally SCREAMED “HOLD ON!!!” -.- my SM and I just looked at each other like wow..... they came up to the window all smiley and I just looked at her and walked away without a smile. (We has a DTR so it’s not like I ignored helping her or anything).

That's cool and all, but always get the payment before handing off the beverage.
delidoll [OP] 4 points 3y ago
did u read it...i wasn’t aware she didn’t pay.
stubrocks 1 points 3y ago
Yeah. It states she says she wasn't paying, and no text explaining otherwise. So did she or didn't she?
