karen encounter (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by booyah360xb1
I work at a licensed store at a university and on my shift Thursday there was a problem with our credit card reader. Turns out, the system was down for the whole university, not just starbucks.
Before we knew that it was a school wide outage, we took a minute to try to figure out the problem with it. While this was going on, an older woman (50s maybe) was complaining about how it was taking too long, and proceeded to ask in a rude tone “So should I just go somewhere else or can you figure it out?” My coworker politely said “If you dont have a different method of payment there’s nothing I can do.” The Karen stormed out and screamed “This Starbucks just has HORRIBLE customer service and I CANNOT believe you guys werent trained to handle these issues.” The rest of the line was full of younger college students and they were sympathetic and understanding.

It always tickles me how every single rude encounter I have with a customer is an older person, while college students are very pleasant to serve.

Sorry you had to deal with that. So many of our customers are like this. Everything needs to work for THEM. ‘Why don’t you have this?’ ‘Why are you out of that?’ And most often, it was things that were out of our control. I had a man threatened us once saying he would call my DM and refer to them by first time this one time we were out of raw sugar.

People just get so worked up about things haha. One of the students in line said to us “Shes only ruining her day not anybody elses” which can apply to all these stupid encounters.

We were out of raw sugar for like 3 days a few weeks ago and on the third day a customer in dt literally said "I feel like you guys just don't want to give me what I want cause I was here yesterday and you said you didn't have it either." Like... yes... because... we're *out*. It's not some fucking vendetta we're holding against you personally, Linda...
