new employee - men's clothing question (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by mx1_jawbreaker
Hey y'all, what's good. I just recently got a job at Starbucks (going through the background check right now), and as I'm looking at my (very small) closet, I'm realizing that I have absolutely nothing that fits the dress requirements. I have one henley style shirt in heather gray, and one flannel which is all muted gray tones. Other than that? SOL.

I'm currently paying my way through college and Starbucks is going to be my 2nd job. Funds are tight, but I'm going to try to get through the first month by buying two new henley / generic long sleeved shirt -- $1. Do you think those will pass?

I'm trans (FTM) and my managers know this, but I'm extremely fickle about my clothing choices. Other than wearing button down business shirts everyday (which I'm not opposed to - I just don't have the funds to buy new ones), I'm floundering trying to find something that's both masculine, but also work appropriate.

Thanks for the help \[thumbs up\]

I think those will work fine! Of course it depends how strict your manager is when it comes to specific clothes you’re not sure about, but I’ve seen coworkers get away with plenty of patterned and graphic shirts and such as long as the apron covers it. As long as your manager is ok with it, it’s fine.

Also, as a fellow FTM barista, most of my work clothes are from H&M! My favorites are their button-up shirts which can be fairly affordable and great for trans guys fit wise. And every so often you get company shirts, too (like the “woah nitro” or pride shirt)

I second what the other commenter said. Short sleeved button downs are a perfect Starbucks choice and there are approximately infinity of them for 2 bucks apiece at every thrift store.

I have a couple shirts in the same style that I wear! I bought both from Target but I think they were about the same price as this one from Kohl’s. Also, if it helps, we’re allowed to wear regular t-shirts now, so if you have t-shirts that fit the color scheme you can wear those.

hey, another ftm partner here who'd also broke af

thrift shops are my best friend, I find great stuff there

and what you could always do is get one or two plain button ups and wear them over a usual t shirt. add layers and contrasting colors, a nice look

one kid at my store literally keeps the same button up in this name-labeled hanging shoe organizer we have in the back and puts it over his t shirt when he comes in after school

I find layers are super helpful and a lot of my clothes come from Old Navy or Maurices during their massive sales. I understand Maurices probably doesn't fit the bill for what you're looking for, but Old Navy would be a great idea to search through and find some base layer shirts that you could put a cardigan on top of if you're cold (I'm constantly freezing and always need layers) and you won't break the bank there. I legit wear skinny jeans and a black long sleeve shirt to Bux every freaking day. I have four of the same black shirt.
