Shift coverage guilt (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Catmowry
I'm always open to people asking me but with my health and other factors I have to say no often and I always feel bad. Any tips to not feeling like a jerk saying no?

You don’t owe that company anything, if you’re responsible and you show up to your scheduled shifts on time and get the job done, you have done everything expected of you. Corporate America will go on without you wearing yourself out due to guilt.

Exactly!! When I was newer I would always agree to working shifts until I realized I was just being taken advantage of for being nice and trying to make a good first impression. Your health comes first! Even if you just don’t feel like working an extra day, that’s just as good enough of a reason as well.

When you say no to taking a shift you’re not really saying no to that person, but to the company who is trying to enforce people to work hours that don’t work for them

“I’m sorry, no” is a complete sentence. You don’t need to feel bad about not covering someone else’s shift. Sometimes I will cover a shift IF I am free, AND I don’t feel like I’ve been run over by a truck AND I’m relatively certain that person might return the favor sometime but that’s it.

I will say, I wouldn’t take the shift with the expectation that they will reciprocate the favor sometime in the future. Many of my coworkers have taken on so many shifts for others and been pissed when they can’t get their “princess” 4 hour shift covered by anyone.

Nah, I don’t mean like that but there are definitely people who I know would do me a solid if they could and those who are just dicks about it. I just kind of think of it as karma credit.
