5.75 and closing rant (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by radmf
I’m tired of being taken advantage of and working 6+ hours because I’m only scheduled for 5.75 hours and there’s no planned lunch for me even though we all know I’m going to hit 6.

My store always takes extra time to close and we usually get out 20+ minutes later than we’re scheduled to leave. My store manager knows this and approves this. But then she also schedules me to work 5.75 with no lunch and I always go over the 6 hour mark.

I’ve brought it up lightly but I’ve been too scared to talk with my store manager about it seriously, but I worked my ass off today for 7 hours and didn’t get a lunch. It’s not only sucking the life out of my partners and I, it’s just plain illegal. I will be discussing it with her next time I see her.

I know some people think lunches are annoying and would prefer not to take them, but when it’s not even an option during a 7 hour shift masked as a “5.75” it’s bullshit. I’m so tired and would’ve appreciated some time to myself to take a break and breathe without customers barking orders at me and expecting perfection.

I’m just annoyed, it’s another way to take advantage of hard working people just trying to get by and only making minimum wage. So much for mental health when I barely get my 10 and often am discouraged from doing so “because honestly I HATE taking my 10 don’t you??? Maybe you should just skip yours today!” Is said pretty often.

Sorry about the rant. Just upset right now, can anyone else relate to this 5.75 thing?

I don’t want to add more to your stress but I would highly recommend looking over at past hours and punches in TeamWorks. The only reason why your SM would approve of this is that they manually give you a lunch after the fact so you’re not even paid for all those times you worked. Unfortunately this has happened too often. Do take a look. Mention sternly about this or move your availability to a mid or morning if you can. Otherwise, keep a detailed documentation for a ‘rainy day’

That’s really insidious if that’s the case.

Unfortunately it’s the reality at most stores. The surefire way to protect your hours is diligently punching in to TeamWorks. SM doesn’t want to manually edit if they don’t have to. Also make sure to tell them you didn’t take your lunch and ensure to follow up that they come through with that.

I hate the 5.75 thing. I go to college 2 full days a week and to be able to hit 20-25 hours of work i have to work a shift literally every other day I don’t have class. I don’t have another day off from work or school or both on the same day for another 2 weeks. I’d rather work three 8 hour shifts a week but the only people who get those shifts at my store are the shifts and the two baristas who open every day during the week and do nothing but bar for their shift. Annoyed

Every time. Thankfully, my store is a little better about being on time, but I’m always just *barely* not working a 6 hour shift just so they don’t have to schedule in a lunch.

You will be docked for that lunch regardless of whether or not you take it. If it’s a closing, do what I did when it kept happening. Clock the fuck out and sit in the lobby. I won’t leave, I understand we are closed and the doors are locked and we have to leave together. But you clock out and sit down. I announced that I was clocking out because I would need a half if I stayed any longer. And I sat there and watched as that same super who always abused me panicked because he legally can NOT argue with me about it, and we ended up leaving about 45 min after we were supposed to because he was banking on me staying and hadn’t even started a lot of tasks because he “knew” I’d do it.

We were never late getting out on a close again on his watch.

Check your state laws too! North Carolina doesn’t have a law that people are required lunches or breaks in service industry, so make sure you’re protected not just by Starbucks policy but by your state!
My parents didn’t know this when I started my first job, so I was working at Olive Garden as a Togo specialist and often had 12-13 hour shifts since I was the last one out of the building with the manager with no break.
And it was perfectly legal, lol.
So when I switched to Starbucks and the management told me about their break policy I was super happy lol
