advice on demote (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by baybecmd
okay so trying to make a long story shot I am a SSV but I’ve been thinking about demoting for a while now for starters I basically make the same right now as I did when I was a barista. I wanted to move on to become ASM/SM but now I’m second guessing it. Starbucks isn’t my endgame, I want to go to school (asu program) for criminology/criminal justice and I just don’t think I’d be happy with moving up tbh. It’s a lot of work/responsibility for basically little pay to me its not worth it anymore and I miss just being a barista. I feel like if I move up or just stay in my position I’m in now I won’t be able to focus on school as much as I’d like to. Does anyone have any advice or maybe how to bring this up to my SM?

Just be honest. You’re over worked underpaid and the benefits don’t make up for the gap. They might try and work with you on a deal but keep you endgame in goal. Stagnation in Starbucks is commonplace nowadays. Best of luck !

I did exactly this and then ended up leaving the company anyways. I was much happier and more zen for the few months I spent back at Barista. If you're not happy and can reasonably afford the (so slight) pay cut, do it.

I transferred to a different store and stepped down. I told my manager I wasn’t happy anymore and it was taking a toll on my health. I told my new manager the same thing. My new manager tried to get me to stay as a shift but I kept saying no. It was better in the long run and yeah I took the pay cut, but I’m happier now then I was as a shift.
