Corrective Action - A serious note (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by dancing_durian
I am seeing a lot of new partners on this sub and first, welcome and hope you are enjoying your work so far. But there’s a thing I want to share that I have been talking to many of my close partners.
Hopefully you are hired into a good store with good morale and team. Unfortunately, this is still retail and therefore, ridden with interpersonal politics and middle management power trips. One of the weapons often used to force people out or straight up terminate someone is writeups or a form called Corrective Action Form.
If you feel like you’re being given a CAF unfairly or on minor charges without being discussed with at least three times for improvement, do make sure to write ‘I do not agree with this assessment’ or something to that effect. And MAKE SURE that YOU have a copy of that.
It even says at the bottom of the form to give the partner being written up a copy.
It can be an emotionally driven experience to be written up but do your best to stay calm, read over everything and to be sure to keep notes and documentations for your protection.
There are a lot of exciting things about a job and lots of things to learn. Knowledge is power. One of the things to learn after training is the ins and outs of things like this. What are the guidelines? What can you and your management do and not do? Who can you go to or call in situations like this?
I do apologize for the long post but I’m tired of seeing people abusing power and seeing partners who are on the receiving end of those things. If anyone has any inputs or personally have dealt with this, you should share your experience.

I had a shift threaten to write me up and then I asked my SM and they said they can’t write me up. The Sm was just glad I didn’t lose my cool because then we’d both get in trouble

Do document that though bc that sounds like not the first time. They would likely have threatened other baristas. And yes, the only thing shifts can do is report to SM about troubling behavior and a good SM will encourage the shifts to provide plenty of coaching before going to a writeup. I’m glad your SM had your back. Also final note, do not resort to any physical or verbal retaliation. Starbucks has ZERO tolerance policy on violence/retaliation.

I don’t know what came about it but yes I did give documentation of the incident. (I was cursed out on the floor)

my first and only write up ever was because i broke the eleven hour rule because my GM told me to come in and clock in... i had no idea i could not approve the write up back then. it was not my fault at all. i’m glad you’re saying this!!!

What is the eleven hour rule?

i guess it’s not in every store or district! but in NYC you can’t work another shift before 11 hours. so thank god but i can’t be scheduled to close and then open.

Ah I see. But yes, if they knowingly tell you to break the rules, it’s on them.
