Confused barista has questions... (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by GingerMic
I’ve been doing dishes for quite a while now, with almost no problems whatsoever. I actually LIKE doing dishes, unlike a lot of my fellow partners at my store.

Recently though, my hands just broke out in hives after being exposed to the sanitizer at my work. The confusing thing is that it’s never happened before, and I’m not allergic to any food or syrups in our store that could have possibly dirtied it. (I’m also a HUGE neat freak when it comes to making sure the sanitizer is as clean as it can be!)

I already have eczema on my hands, so I’m not sure what could’ve triggered it. Does this happen to anyone else??? (Any recommendations on what to do would also be welcome, although I’m already treating my hands with a special lotion and Benadryl.)

Is the Sani coming out at proper strength also? Check with a dip stick that it is be right amount of parts per what ever the thing says

Came here to say this. sounds like you're getting too much of the chemical concentration in the mix

Most often this is because the sanitizer is too hot. A lot of people get this mixed up with wash which is supposed to be hot, at least 110F. Sani should be room temp, about 70F. any hotter and it gets to be corrosive to skin. You can also wear gloves. If you don't have rubber gloves, then ask a SSV or SM to order them.

Oh wow... just realized that the sanitizers is MY PROBLEM OMFG. My right hand has been getting really irritated and I’ve been wondering why not my left hand! It’s because I’m right handed and the sanitizer rags we clean the bar with wow. Just thought it was because of the weather but that normally doesn’t bother me!

What temperature was the water?? If it is too hot or too cold, it changes the potency. It should be room temperature or slightly warmer. Maybe that could have been the cause? Hope this helps

I get dried out also due to it being winter but this is a major thing for the concentration levels if your that bad.....

I’m surprised more people haven’t experienced this sooner! I mean... it’s literally bleach that we’re putting our hands in billions of times a day.

I’d recommend using gloves! Either use the green ones or get your own with higher sleeves. I don’t do dishes often or I would.

Eczema can be triggered at any time.
Look at previous solutions but if the temps don’t work use gloves.
Also the standard go to prescription for that w eczema is triamcinolone acetonide cream 0.1% 😉
