Calling out when you’re actually sick (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by kirstinbrown18
Wanted some of your opinions on this... I’ve worked full time at Starbucks for 8 months now and I’ve never called out one time for any reason until this past weekend. I had the flu and was throwing up and had a bad fever and my SM and some of my shifts told me I needed to come into work anyways even though it was very obvious that I was super sick... I didn’t come in because I felt horrible and I didn’t want to get all my coworkers and customers sick too. I’m back at work now and they’re all giving me a really hard time and just don’t treat me the same anymore. Have any of y’all had similar experiences :/

Same thing happened to me a couple weeks ago. I had an 8am shift and when I woke up I was just constantly vomiting. I had never called out before so I didn’t actually know how...? I texted my sm and told her I was vomiting; she responded really sarcastically and told me to come in anyway because I didn’t find coverage. Being someone who deals with severe anxiety, I had a panic attack over feeling like I was a terrible person and she hated me. I started getting ready to go in but, luckily, someone got my shift covered last minute. She hasn’t even made direct eye contact with me since it happened, and I still feel guilty. I don’t know what I was supposed to have done in that situation, but I still feel terrible every time I think about it.

Call PCC and tell them exactly what happened. Making you come in while vomiting is a major health code violation. Seriously

Second this. If you’re really sick and your manager tries to make you come in anyway, report their ass up the chain of command. That’s some bullshit. And you also aren’t required to find your own coverage if you’re sick.

It’s illegal in my state to strong arm a sick employee into working, so I’ve never experienced it personally. However, wherever you live, it’s BS for them guilt you about being sick. I would for sure go to corporate with a complaint. Also consider a store transfer just in case the bullying continues.

It's 100% against corporate policy to force someone to work while sick. Partners are also not responsible for finding coverage. Everyone please spread the word.

4 yr barista; and I can guarantee you that no matter what the reason is that you called out the affected partners will be annoyed with you. Is it right?, ABSOLUTELY NOT. But is it expected behavior?, Sadly yes.
At the end of the day you have to prioritize your needs, especially your health. That's adult life. They'll get over it, and if not you're better off not investing any real connections with such petty people. Clock in, clock out, live your life.

That’s not only a health code violation and against policy, it’s likely illegal. Call PCC and tell them what happened!

You need to contact your district manager immediately and if they are unwilling to do anything then contact PCC because, that is illegal, against Starbucks policy, and just immoral.

All I know is if my coworker who was throwing up came in, I’d be walking right tf out. I’d rather work understaffed than risk catching that

Retaliation is grounds for separation with Starbucks so you definitely need to report it to your DM and PCC. The company JUST issued a statement telling partners if you're sick to stay home. Coronavirus is growing by the day, let's feed it.

I understand where you coming from as I have only called in sick twice in the entire time I have worked there for a few years. It is actually illegal for you to work when sick. So if you get to much flack for it then I would talk to the sm or the dm if the sm is giving you flack also. You just can’t make food and drinks for customers and risk getting them sick.

Just show up to work next time vomit on some stuff then go home. When thy ask why you did that tell them “ you said to come in”!

I hear about that stuff too often. And my advice is always the same. Call your DM and partner resources to complain about being treated unfairly because of legitimately calling out sick. And if it happens again call the health department. It is not acceptable to mistreat someone for calling out sick because that leads to people working while sick and getting everyone else (partners and customers) sick.
