Confirms with customer that it will take a little extra time....

3 seconds later: WHY ISN'T IT READY YET?
Spider939 83 points 3y ago
I’M SORRY KAREN I DON’T FUCKING CONTROL GRAVITY
Spider939 121 points 3y ago
I don’t mind as long as it’s not super busy. That being said, if you insist on a pour over in drive then you’re a bad person.
Ziaheart 9 points 3y ago
You aren't allowed to tell them to park?
Spider939 7 points 3y ago
Nope. Not allowed to pull anyone forward for any reason now. Dumb as hell.
chanelxo8 2 points 3y ago
Wait what. Since when?
Ziaheart 2 points 3y ago
Wow, what a terrible policy.
Spider939 2 points 3y ago
It’s ridiculous.
20kaisera 6 points 3y ago
When our district manager was asked why we can’t ask people to pull to the side he said “this is not a McDonald’s”
Spider939 12 points 3y ago
“Okay then I don’t want to hear about customer connection anymore because our drive time went up 20 minutes because Karen didn’t like how her 6 Frappuccinos were made during peak.”

I got a Chemex for Christmas so I can make actually good coffee for myself at home, so recently I’ve kind of learned to love making pour overs because I’ve done so much research of how to do it properly to get the perfect cup of coffee. Every morning I wake up and weigh out my beans, time myself, and do everything perfect because for me it’s more about the routine and the craft rather than the coffee. The other day I was making a pour over for a customer and I poured enough water to saturate the coffee then let it sit for a few seconds so it could bloom and oxidize and a ssv who is very by the book came up and was like “YOU’RE DOING IT WRONG YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO KEEP POURING UNTIL ALL THE WATER IS GONE!” And I just looked at them and was like “trust me...I know how to make a pour over.”
Slightly_Caffeinated 36 points 3y ago
This made my heart happy :) I make myself a pour over every morning too (I switch between my Chemex, V60 and Kalita Wave 185). I weigh out my beans, grind them and pay attention to my water temp in my new Stagg EKG. We deserve to work at a reserve bar 😪
275bruhista 6 points 3y ago
Yessss. I honestly never liked coffee before I started working at sbux but now I love it and love learning about the chemistry behind it and how to make a truly perfect cup. I’m not sure how realistic it is but I’d LOVE to open my own unique shop someday :)
Slightly_Caffeinated 2 points 3y ago
Samee. Sometimes I like to fantasize about running my own cafe 🙃
Dontsnitch92 1 points 3y ago
They dont just hire anyone at the reserve bar??
cs_phoenix 25 points 3y ago
Nice! I own about every type of coffee apparatus with the exception of an espresso machine and a pour over set up. I always enjoy doing pour overs at work bc it lets me get some practice before I actually get a V60!

I’ve also had a SSV get confused that I was letting the coffee sit during its bloom phase haha. Sometimes I feel that Starbucks is kind of a bastardized version of a real coffee shop lmao.
275bruhista 3 points 3y ago
My boyfriend and I almost bought the breville barista express like a month ago but ultimately decided it costs too much haha. I so want it though.
cs_phoenix 2 points 3y ago
I would love to use the barista express, I’ve heard good things about it!

Although if I had a ridiculous amount of disposable income I would instantly buy a fully tricked out Linea Mini.
275bruhista 2 points 3y ago
Of course. A NEED.
Dontsnitch92 1 points 3y ago
It is. All the flavored syrups GMO
cs_phoenix 1 points 3y ago
...I think there are bigger reasons why but I guess?
crims0ncircuit 20 points 3y ago
I was always trained to pre wet the filter, soak your grinds with enough water then let it sit for a few seconds to oxidize and bloom, then keep pouring water. If you look it up on the Hub it walks you through the steps too.... So I'm assuming your SSV just doesn't know how to do a proper pour over 🤷

I love making pour overs though, I find it so relaxing!
275bruhista 3 points 3y ago
Yes! I always pre wet the filter too to get the paper taste out but my coworkers always look at me like I’m crazy when I do it!!!
xEman26x 8 points 3y ago
Actually the pour over routine guide shit tells you to wait 10 seconds to allow the grinds to bloom
MiniAussieMom82 1 points 3y ago
I was going to say the same thing, but you beat me to it. Yes. This. A lot of people don’t know that. I’m glad some of us do.
potterlyfe 4 points 3y ago
To be fair, I haven’t looked at the pour over guide for a while but it did use to say to keep pouring slowly in a circular pattern until the water is all in. Can’t really fault them for being ‘by the book’ when Starbucks is all about standards. 🤷🏼‍♀️
LucrativeLukas 3 points 3y ago
Same!! Wake up, through the gooseneck on the stove get dressed, grind the beans, brush my teeth, and pour up the chemex and drink it on the way to work. But are you guys using Starbucks beans?? 🤢
275bruhista 1 points 3y ago
I use sbux beans when I don’t have a lot of money to buy good shit (usually blonde because it’s the only one that’s not completely over roasted) but I’ve also recently been experimenting with drinktrade.com which lets me try new types I’ve never had before.

They’re honestly fine as long as it’s not during peak or in DT.
hexsan91 10 points 3y ago
There’s a special circle of hell awaiting those who ask for pour overs or iced brewed teas in DT
Peebles46 9 points 3y ago
I have a regular who orders iced London fogs and I have personally reserved a seat in Hell for him.
MiniAussieMom82 1 points 3y ago
Same here. She orders it in the drive thru OR she mobile orders and thirty seconds later gets in drive thru to PICK IT UP!!
Pz1129 16 points 3y ago
The brew batch guide has really been messing with us... it doesn’t want us brewing anything but Pike before 7am, but most of the coffee order are for dark or blonde. We tell it every time that we ran out but it keeps insisting pour over only. It makes for a fun time all around.
NyanBecca 12 points 3y ago
I would just brew it anyway tbh, my SM said we should brew all 3 at open but I’ve noticed only the pike and blonde sells at my location. I follow it to a T usually except on Monday it told me to brew TWO FULL batches of like at 7:30am lmao
sweetinasense 15 points 3y ago
Even worse a pour over pike with steamed heavy cream and 14 stevia.
smaidit 3 points 3y ago
a pour over pike? you don’t have it brewed throughout the day?
sweetinasense 9 points 3y ago
Yes as do all Sbux. But that doesn’t stop
People from demanding a p/o because it’s “fresher that way”... I have on countless occasions pointed out my timer indicating that the coffee has been brewed less than 30 min ago... to no avail.
smaidit 3 points 3y ago
that is so awful i never had anyone ask me for a pour over pike yet
lemonjuicepulp 1 points 3y ago
The steamed milk for coffee drives me nuts!!! I have one guy who always orders coffee and only mentions he wants steamed half and half AFTER we charge him so we don’t get paid of labor. He gets pissed if we try to charge him for the steamed half and half
fofonai 9 points 3y ago
When I was a barista, there was this one dude who would get a $2.50 pour over but would always tip us $5. Such a wholesome man ❤️
1002003004005006007 1 points 3y ago
We have a regular that tips us for a sample cup of coffee. I used to think it was strange until I realize that he’s tipping us.
cskrzyz 8 points 3y ago
Today was the day that I actually offered to do a pour over of dark roast for someone. It was for an elderly gentleman and it was his birthday, and he kept saying he didn’t want to be any trouble. No ragrets.
MiniAussieMom82 2 points 3y ago
Definitely some people I don’t mind doing it for... someone like that? Anytime. Karen?? Nope.
SCathers14 8 points 3y ago
My mom LOVES dark roasts, and always seems to order coffee after you’ve stopped brewing it .... in the plus side, Starbucks is the only place I’ve seen her NOT be a Karen when it comes to waiting 😂
Saoirse_Says 5 points 3y ago
You know I never had a customer order a pourover who wasn't willing to wait. And only once or twice did I have a customer order one while it's busy.

Honestly made me sad when I got to make pourovers. I couldn't really remember the finer details of how to make a really good pourover and realised I wasn't anything close to a barista in the proper sense of the term.

But yeah pourovers are great and I really can't hold it against someone to want one if they only have time to go to Starbucks and not one of the other many coffee shops in town.
Jeffuk88 5 points 3y ago
I think this perception depends on how the team in general views pour overs. The team at my store don't mind pour overs, in fact we only do decaf on pour over because as a kiosk we don't have space to brew it into an urn and nobody complains
kiervince -2 points 3y ago
we just tell people we dont have decaf
miniinovaa 1 points 3y ago
We try to offer a decaf americano instead for the same price lol. My store h a t e s pourovers buuut we are an extremely high volume store with 3 high schools surrounding us. So we have a morning rush, lunch A & B lunch (idk how their lunch works exactly but they come in waves) and after school rush. So pulling support to help the front make a pour over really ducks us over
ithotuknew 3 points 3y ago
Had a guy who ordered a pour over during peak regularly. Never seemed to mind the wait or anything. It really do be like that sometimes
holdenthesecoronas 2 points 3y ago
“can i get a pike pour over, it’s okay i don’t mind waiting!”
starbuckscout 2 points 3y ago
Timing is everything. I love our store because we are a reserve store. A few of us on the team are coffee nerds, so we use a Chemex and our SM just for a siphon for our store!

We have a customer who always wants a decaf pour over at 7:30pm...we all hate him
AndrewtheRey 1 points 3y ago
I am knocking on wood so hard, but my stores pour over thing is dusty because nobody orders a pour over
blo0ming 1 points 3y ago
I had someone come in a few days ago during peak and they requested a tall komodo french press. I almost leaped across the counter
acuppalife 1 points 3y ago
I love a pour over, but I make it for myself on my break. Also there was a really nice guy who loves dark roast but usually came late, so I'd make him a pour over because he was patient and appreciated the extra effort.
official_koda_ 1 points 3y ago
It’s sooo annoying. Especially people in the DT and when people complain how we don’t have it brewing...
ambibot 0 points 3y ago
Sm tells me to warm people that pour overs can take up to 10 min.
Guy comes in, tell him it can take up to 10 min. He says it doesn't.
Ok, what ever.
10 minutes later..
He didn't seem to care at least.
