Are there telltale signs for Starbucks DbShots On Ice? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by BayAreaSBux
I get a Starbucks DbShot on ice almost everyday, (blonde shots are just so good), and I also recently started making it for myself when working so I thought for sure I know exactly what one looks like. However I got one today that had 0 foam whatsoever. I thought that it’s impossible to make the drink without foam(per the shaker). I asked the barista if they could ask who made it if it was indeed shaken (mobile order, less than 7 minutes ago) and they said yes it was. I just took it since they were in a small rush and didn’t want to throw a remake into it. Is there other signs besides foam that I can tell it was a Starbucks DbShot instead of regular espresso shots over ice or am I stuck just asking for a remake if it doesn’t seem right?

Edit: Sorry forgot to include a picture. Yes I did drink like 15% of it before taking the picture.

(Okay I don’t know how reddit works since the picture is showing blank)

I think this one works? But after looking at this picture it just looks like a latte now... (i get it with 1 pump white mocha for extra taste ... and now looking closely I see it on the bottom, so I think they didn’t use the shaker) Guess I should have paid more attention before making the post.

On a very off-topic note: is anyones lids not properly fitting to cups? My store tall nitro refuse to fit/adhere properly and at my mobile order store, the grande lid isn’t fitting regardless of position and spills on me whenever I take a sip.

* Should have foam
* Should have layers
* Should be just a splash of milk
* Should not look stirred or completely mixed together

Thanks! I remember reading that some people note that the layers separate after a bit. Would you or someone else know if its a quick thing? I tend to speed walk to my classes while drinking so I’m sure that mixes it so I can’t really tell when the layers begin to separate. I’m assuming that the ~5 minutes of waiting on the handoff shouldn’t be enough though?

Honestly, I’ve never paid close enough attention be able to say with certainty.

I think they lied because I can’t think of a way to properly shake it without getting foam and that’ll honestly mess up the proportions of the drink bc they have to fill the rest of the cup with something like water, ice, 2%, etc....did it taste the same as usual?

As for your side note none of our trenta lids properly fit the cups nowadays sometimes I have to pull out 3-5 lids before I can get one to snap on it’s so annoying

I think a new company is making the lids. Has anyone else noticed the new sleeves of drunks. It’s like a shiny annoying plastic now

Hmm it was quite sweeter( I get soy) but at the same time I’ve gotten the drink 8 mornings from this store in the past 2 weeks and tbh it’s been varying based on who’s making my drink so I just assumed maybe whoever made it was using different pump amounts. I’ve had one day with super bitter shots (assuming the mastrena just pulled bad shots and they didn’t notice).

Anyways @ the lid comment and the person who responded to you... seems about right that a new company is providing them. We’ve had entire sleeves of lids that refuse to snap on(You could literally just take off the lid with one finger).

Edit: well I finally included picture in original and yeaaah I think I was just too sleepy from waking up for school to notice some obvious things about it.

I will say at my store a lot of baristas will ask how to make the dbl shot on ice. So they probably made it wrong. And for the day it was super bitter, they probably poured the shots directly on the ice. The big change in temp from the machine to directly on ice will ruin the flavor of espresso.

Oh yeah definitely my store is like that too. I was trained on it when I first started but I’ve seen it ordered maybe three times in the 6 months I’ve been with Starbucks. I’m guessing that the barista I asked may have been confused by ‘shaken’ since I did have a pump of white mocha in it and usually you ‘shake/swirl’ the cup with the espresso to mix it.

As for the shots on ice comment, that makes more sense. I remember reading about it often in this sub, and I absolutely hate it when my store coworkers do that for the iced caramel macchiatos. I’ve tried telling them it makes it bitter but they always eventually go back to pulling the shots directly to the cup where theres usually ice poking out.

sadly the double shot on ice is one of those super hit or miss it seems... lots of potential shortcuts can be taken... which make it not right... I know we have some people in my store who try to shortcut on even teas and refreshers by skipping the shaker step... it ends up with the wrong ratios and shaking does change how it tastes...

so I'd venture a guess someone made it in the cup, classic, ice, then put shots on top and then a splash of milk and swirled it around a little to make it seem mixed...

as for the lids... there have been issues with them for years... part of the manufacturing process... there are tolerances for size both large and small... get cups that edged on the larger side and lids on the smaller and they are hard to fit... or reverse and the lids hardly stick on... add new manufacture they may even have wider variances...

I’ve given up on ordering the Starbucks double shot because no one, not even my coworkers ( aside from my shift leads) know how to make
It. I’ve seen baristas pour the milk in the shaker, pour the espresso, simple sweetener, ice and then shake, some will
Make it just like espresso poured over ice, etc. it’s my favorite drink but everyone makes it wrong and I don’t want to be rude and direct them on how to make it 😩

Tbh it doesn’t look like it got shaken. It also looks way too light to be a double shot on ice. The double shot on ice is pretty popular at my store. Even if you waited 30 minutes to pick up the foam from the shots being shaken would deflate and you probably be left with a little more than half a cup of liquid. For me the tell tale is it being too light in color. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ honestly I’d say fuck it and ask for a remake. Don’t be a dick just say it doesn’t look or taste like normal.
