Trenta Rant - New location refuses to follow standards (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by katgat
Yesterday was my second day at this franchise store (I think that’s what it’s called? It’s at a university, not a corporate store).

I’ve worked at a different location for a while, and they were pumped to have someone with experience come in. I go in my first day like two hours after open and the place is a disaster. They didn’t even introduce me to anyone before throwing me on bar. When we slow down I ended up spending all of my time cleaning because it was disgusting. I thought there is no way somewhere is this dirty after being open for two hours, but they’re generally super busy so I didn’t say anything. I go in yesterday and it’s the same way! I closed with the - only - SSV they have... and it hit me. They don’t clean more than the bare minimum until Friday. Guys it is so bad she wasn’t able to get one of the blenders apart. I couldn’t get the white mocha apart and she was like “haha yeah I’m pretty sure it hadn’t been taken apart to clean since my last Friday close... which was two weeks ago”. They never clean their syrup bottles, so they’re covered in syrup and the pumps stick. They only keep like one gallon of milk at a time in their fridge. I guess the other parent company also refuses to toss out any thawed food after two days so they keep EVERYTHING for 5 days (they’re open Monday thru Friday and toss everything on Friday night). They leave food in their case from Sunday to Friday night, don’t replace (or sell) anything that’s in the case all week.

I said something to the SSV who I closed with and she’s like yeah the other employees refuse to date for anything and won’t clean things. And I said well write them up then... and she said she can’t. And the “manager” refuses to write anyone up. I asked how they have been getting away with it with the people who do inspections and I guess the manager is in tight with the guy who does it so... he doesn’t even inspect anything.

I’m just at a loss. Every time I work I work my ass off to clean everything to where it should be but... I don’t know. All of this has just blown my mind and made me so angry.

that’s wild. I’m sure the health hazard this all poses isn’t lost on you. at this point I’d genuinely consider leaving the store, maybe going back to a corporate location with better management. sucks that you have to deal with it though

I’m actually waiting on background to come back to return to a corporate store! I took this job just in case it doesn’t pan out.. I just hate that this is what this location is like. I want to help somehow but I don’t know how other than making sure everything is good when I’m there. I know of at least some of the obvious ones are health hazards.. but I don’t know what to do about it since the inspector they have doesnt give a shit. They literally have zero accountability for anything they do

Sadly not that's not uncommon at licensed stores. There's just not that much oversight at most licensed stores, typically a quarterly visit by a district manager, and not too much else.

I went to a university starbucks and saw them doing a 8-person play to handle a 40, and I asked one of their supervisors why they had so many people for such a slow part of the day, and she just sighed and said turnover is crazy, most people work there only 1-2 semesters, and generally most people work 20 hours or less, so most of the people there just don't know or don't care about the job. In that kind of situation everything is an uphill battle to meet the most basic standards.
