New manager write out the deployment plan for every day for two weeks?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by alycrawford42-
To me, this feels like micromanaging at its worst. But having never worked at another store, I don’t know if this is normal or not. It’s like, what’s the point of having shift supervisors if they can’t make calls they think are best for what’s happening in the moment? Is this normal?

Every manager I've had does this. I think it's at the direction of our DM. The amount of times I've followed it or even looked at is zero. I'm there to run the floor, and that's what I'm going to do. I'm not going to put someone on a position they don't want because the SM decided it three weeks ago. My last manager expressly told me that she didn't expect me to follow it, and it was basically just busy work given to her by the DM.

I absolutely second this \^

It’s because they are supposed to write it out- I just finished up my online shift training last week and according to it the SM is supposed to set out the deployment plan in advance and shifts are able to move people around as needed supposedly

Formality at its worst. I spend 1-2 hrs every Monday doing this for my SM, knowing full well that it’s not going to be followed to the t.

As an SM I've been told to deploy all peak shifts. However, the SSV cN flex the play to out aces and partners in better positions. We are told to make the plan, but I empower my shifts to make the right call with the partners they know better.

Yeah it’s total bull. Nobody looks at it besides the manager to make sure it’s done. It’s just wasting time when I’m forced to take an hour and a half to put it together when I could be doing things that actually matter out on the floor.

My manager does this as well but straight up told us that it is basically just a suggestion because that is our job. When SMs or ASMs build the schedule they usually start off by doing bar and scheduling peaks with good bar people etc. They almost go through their head saying who would I put here type of thing. At the end of the day, your job is to call the play and do what you believe would be best for the store and customers at that point in time and flex accordingly. Also, every ssv runs their shift differently from the next ssv or from the 'standard protocol' which is what makes us better at certain shifts and tasks. So I would talk to your SM or ASM and talk to them about if they expect you to follow it or just use it as a suggestion.

My DM just assigns big tasks that need labor like the pull, tips, orders, etc.

I've only ever seen an SM do this for a brand new SSV, and with the expectation that they were teaching them how to deploy so they could do it without the help of the SM in the future. My DM generally doesn't like this level of micromanagement, he thinks SMs shouldn't be doing a SSVs job for them.

My manager tried this for awhile, but realuzed we didnt pay attention to it AT ALL. Especially since there are ao many times we have to flex according to staffing and situation.
