it finally happened(?!) (self.starbucksbaristas)

I was the OP who posted a few weeks ago about “strangely sweet customers”. My experience had been the older gentleman that would give all the ladies that I work with pepper spray (but I hadn’t gotten any at that point).

Well last night during my closing shift, it happened! He walked up to the drive thru window (it was kind of scary at first, lol), but then I saw that he had a HUGE smile on his face. I opened the window and he handed me some new pepper spray. He said “you walk to your car at night, you need to be safe!” and after me asking a million times if he was sure, he just reminded me “I want you to be safe”.

It was the most kind gesture that I had experienced in a long time, though I had to wonder why he had been doing this. After talking to my coworkers, I found out his sister (who is his age as well), was assaulted and is trying to make sure it never happens to anyone he knows (again).

I just hope he knows how much we appreciate him and his sweet gestures. 💚💚

[TLDR: An older gentleman came in to give me pepper-spray last night & told me to be safe. Its just the sweetest thing I’ve experienced in a while and it’s so dang wholesome.]

This is a nice story, but make sure that you don't create an excuse for an SM or DM to do anything against you. official policy is no weapons in the store, so keep it out of sight unless you need to use it.

None of us (who have gotten it) have kept it or will keep it in the store. It’s a known thing that happens and I was told as long as I take it home, it’s not a problem. 👍🏼

Manager here. Pretty much all my female partners have either pepper spray or the keychain puncture wound thing and no one bats an eye or thinks it’s a weapon. Other managers have it as well. Corporate knows there’s safety risks to many of its partners which is why it’s working on safe ride for many of its employees that work in high risk area. If a manager or DM has an issue with it and classifies it as a weapon rather than self defense tool as apposed to a knife or gun then I would call ethics and compliance to plead the case, they’d most likely support the barista in question. I’ll follow up to find out for sure but still support my partners in carrying these items if I’m wrong.
