Is this enforced in your store as well? (self.starbucksbaristas)

So cursing is obviously a no-no on the floor but what about the backroom? I got a write up a few days ago for cursing in the backroom. I was on my 10 and goofing on my shift supervisor (we're friends, that's how we talk). My manager was also there at the desk and overheard. To be fair my manager did give me a warning beforehand so I understand why I got one. But is everyone's store this strict with cursing in the backroom or am I just unfortunate???
I mean I have to put on a show for 8 hours on the floor why can't I fucking curse in the back to blow off steam or talk casually with my friends? Isn't it suppose to be a safe space for partners? Like what the actual fuck?

I swear all the time. Over the head sets in the back room. I get it. But at the same time I never heard anyone really enforcing it to that level. I would understand maybe if a customer heard it. I had a barista swear over headset on accident to a customer because she ran into another partner while making a coffee and dropped the f bomb. She got yelled at but not a write up. That’s so interesting how stores range. But ya I’m almost 7 years and swear like a sailor. Never had a problem . With all three managers in different districts.

Man that's how it use to be for me. 4 years in and I'm on my third manager. She's sweet overall but a real prick sometimes. I swear she's overreaching the no swear policy.
mcr0414 3 points 3y ago
That’s crazy. It was in the back room! What word was it? Do you mind me asking? Also do you guys get along? Do you feel like she is kinda trying to get rid of you? ( horrible questions but I’m kinda being serious managers are petty af)
tragicalyhappy [OP] 3 points 3y ago
I think I said shit and motherfucker. But I was joking around with my shift, who's my friend. I overall get along with my manager but she doesn't like my 'realistic' viewpoints on Starbucks and it's culture. And yes I know they can be petty, I've heard some awful things throughout my time. Thanks for asking tho.

My outside hire manager maybe like a year or 2 ago when she came on she wrote this one kid up for absolutely everything to try and get rid of him.
I’m not saying that’s what yours is doing to you but he was a good kid and I swear every little thing she wrote him up for. Managers just can’t fire partners which you prob know since you have been around for awhile. They need it all written down on paper so nothing can come back. It’s hard to get fired. I would also keep documents of everything you get written up for and just make sure it’s fair and if someone does the same thing put her in her place and wonder why they aren’t being written up for the same. That’s fucking ridiculous. Good luck. Sorry that happened.

All my coworkers and I curse on the floor and the back room. Even my store manager curses on the floor and I’ve said fuck, shit, etc, around her quite often so it’s not a problem at my store

I work at Starbucks in Australia - if we weren’t allowed to swear at work the store would have no baristas hahaha
tragicalyhappy [OP] 1 points 3y ago
That's fucking awesome lol

tragicalyhappy [OP] 2 points 3y ago

Swearing is the norm at my store...we tone it down around some partners and obviously never use profane language around customers but when talking to each other its totally casual
dearDem 4 points 3y ago
I would never write someone up for cursing.

A “hey, hey now!” suffices just fine.
gorplo 4 points 3y ago
god fuckin dammit fucking frappaweewee stinky asshole macchapeeno honey citrus butt fuck my ass god dammit
tragicalyhappy [OP] 3 points 3y ago
Ah you too are a man (or woman) of culture I see. Simply poetic.
theologie 4 points 3y ago
We swear like fucking sailors and people talk about their sex lives over headset VERY openly/explicitly. Probs not professional but we don’t really do it loud enough for any customers to hear/to the customers (unless they’re chill regulars who swear with us too). This job is hella stressful if I couldn’t curse every now and then to blow off steam I worry what the alternative would be haha.
implicates_ 3 points 3y ago
someone from my district got fired immediately without warning because he swore. apparently starting the 14th of Feb. there is a new "no swearin/abuse policy" that has taken action. so yeah swearing =fired
cairishgirl 3 points 3y ago
At my store we strictly enforce no cursing on the floor. In the back it is allowed to an extent. If a reasonable person finds what you’re saying offensive though then you’ll typically be warned and then given a corrective action.
thesassqueen99 3 points 3y ago
Oh no we're allowed to do whatever
AndrewtheRey 2 points 3y ago
My manager cussed on the floor and over the headsets. The other day a customer was being difficult and she said to us over the headset “will this fucking bitch just go to Dunkin’ Donuts or something?” (We’re located Close to a dunkin”
tragicalyhappy [OP] 1 points 3y ago
Lol that's a manager I can support!
darkwolf523 2 points 3y ago
I do it when there’s no customers to hear me or if some customers are chill and don’t really care
dodonique 2 points 3y ago
My store swears in the back, as well as on the floor or over headset. I think it's more about the context and if you're swearing loud enough for customers to hear. But, as shown by the comments here, it's all up to how the supervisors and others interpret it
Zuzuchic 1 points 3y ago
It's possible there are partners in the store who find that kind of language offensive and uncomfortable. Your manager did give you a warning, which you ignored. You are at work.
DharmaDousin 0 points 3y ago
Swearing is a lowly form of communication. The English vocabulary is massive, and there are far better ways to communicate.
agentdouble1s 0 points 3y ago
If I'm going to go strictly by handbook standards, you should not curse while at work. Your ten is a paid break and you are still representing the company. You are still on Starbucks property. It could offend another partner or make them uncomfortable. It could come off as a hostile work environment. You cannot assume everyone is okay with foul language. This wouldn't just be a Starbucks company policy... Other places of work (not just retail) would enforce this.
tragicalyhappy [OP] 7 points 3y ago
Yeah that's pretty much what she explained to me, and I accept that. But I sure don't fucking like it.

Professionalism.
LankyRestaurant3 7 points 3y ago
We're Starbucks baristas, not fucking politicians
tragicalyhappy [OP] 6 points 3y ago
Yes, in the public eye absolutely. When I'm in the backroom, on my break, talking with my friend, no.
xjdempseyx -3 points 3y ago
We are being compensated by a company who has guidelines for creating a warm and welcoming environment. When we are within the 4 walls, whether on break or otherwise, we are expected to communicate with each other with respect and dignity. I’m struggling to see why this is so controversial.
tragicalyhappy [OP] 3 points 3y ago
And I absolutely do make that effort for customers and partners alike. Cursing doesn't necessarily mean you're being disrespectful or taking away someone's dignity. I'm talking with my friend in the back with whom I feel close enough to speak freely.
