Do y’all ever have morning customers who just wait outside of the door for until you open(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ithotuknew
My dude stood outside of our door for about 12 minutes until we opened. His car was in the parking lot when I pulled in, and I’m opening shift, and I was there 10 minutes early! What did he order? Venti dark roast, no room. Oatmeal, lukewarm with no toppings.
He will legit start shaking the door handle if I’m even 30 seconds late.
He lives a cursed life.

We have a regular that's kind of like that, but he's a creepy old man and he sits in the cafe for almost half of the day. I'd feel sorry for him being lonely enough to do this everyday, but he's made some inappropriate comments to some of us barista's so...no. I don't feel sorry. He's lonely for a reason.

He hasn't been banned from the store for that?
kylakat1310 points3y ago
Nope. He's a favorite to all of our other regulars. They always stop to talk to him briefly, or even for hours. There'd probably be backlash if we banned him. This is another reason why I want to leave...

We have one of those too. It sucks.

I have them sitting and waiting at the drive window. They just sit and watch til we're open

We have a woman who arrives at 5:31, every morning for her grande quad toffee nut syrup latte
Disastrous_Pickle26 points3y ago
We had someone who would wait exactly till 5:01 to mobile order his tall peppermint mocha. Every day. Would show up and get cranky at 5:04 if it wasn’t done because we were opening

One time a homeless guy threw himself onto the window and then tried to set our store and himself on fire because we weren’t opened yet.
justabarista2262 points3y ago
What do you even do in that situation? I was not trained for that kind of event. Were you all okay??
PatchouliKnowsAll3 points3y ago
i honestly really freaked out and didn’t felt safe staying there. thankfully, we actually had an officer outside to help defuse the situation (that sounds weird to say). i have way too many stories similar to that where someone is trying to harm our baristas. we aren’t paid enough for this shit.

We have a guy who sits in his car for about an hour in the parking lot until we open. Regular, nice guy, I'm just always wondering why he sits there with the car running for so long.

We had someone like this, not an hour but he'd show up around the time we did. And wait for us to open.
One day we were chatting and he mentioned that every morning he drops his daughter off at work, in the nearby grocery store, and then would wait for us to open so he could bring coffee back to his partner to wake up to.
Wholesome if unexpected explanation
mistaKM17 points3y ago
Man, these days he could be doing anything. Games on his phone (or a switch or anything), maybe writing a blog on a laptop, or going through his uber trips from the night before.
Is it possible to tactfully ask?
pourovers_first4 points3y ago
I don't feel like any of us are friendly enough with him to ask. It's possible he's just an early riser and wants to get out of the house, I suppose.
sandycat5555 points3y ago
He might be getting off work and on his way home
marsrants17 points3y ago
We used to have this curmudgeon that would knock on the glass 5-8 minutes before we were supposed to be open. And he would start barking his order before anyone was even at the register yet . I dont miss him.

Yeah bc my store is in downtown Manhattan, we call them penguins.
strawwbabyy10 points3y ago
lmao we had another store literally on the next block and they opened 30 minutes before us. did that stop customers from waiting in front of our store 30 minutes before we open? no
resentnothing10 points3y ago
yes and it's part of why i hate opening because the people who do that make me super uncomfortable
[deleted]8 points3y ago
we have a regular that sits outside at 4:55 am and proceeds to order a venti pike with extra cream and everyday is terrible to us, acting all impatient bc we’re barely opened yet and still trying to get stuff together so we can’t have her out by 5 am.
courtnafer6 points3y ago
My store has a whole hoard of regulars that are always waiting for us to open, they easily set my morning procedures back a good 20-30 minutes
thenarwhalsbarista5 points3y ago
We have one that does that, stares in the window and won't shut up about "that one time you were late"
jakhei5 points3y ago
we have a lady who parks right outside our drive thru at minimum 5 minutes before we open almost every day. once 4:30 hits, venti green tea frapp with 7 scoops no whip. every. time.
cush45 points3y ago
Always. Question is do you open 10 early for those who wait outside? I don’t
ithotuknew [OP]5 points3y ago
Of course not. That prep time is too good to waste
BumblingBaileyBee5 points3y ago
A friendly homeless gentlemans waits 30 min every sunday to come in at opening for a drip and sit for an hour.
cush44 points3y ago
My new store manager asked if i followed the SB 10 rule i was like Hell No!! Thats like letting a vampire out of its coffin
ithotuknew [OP]3 points3y ago
I always thought that was about closing early??? Wild
[deleted]4 points3y ago
I haven’t done morning shifts in a while but I do know we have a regular who comes in super early to buy a cappuccino and a ham and cheese croissant. If we’re out of the latter he’ll get super pissy and storm out of the store.
Like. Okay? Have a good day, sir?
pebbels2353 points3y ago
I was scheduled to work exactly when we opened ( at 5) and when I showed up about 10 minutes before we opened there was a group of about 7 middle aged ladies who started yelling at me for trying to cut in front of them to be the first in line when we opened
