Question regarding benefits and hours cut (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by nightkat89
Recently I became eligible for benefits through Starbucks and proceeded to sign up. I noticed the following schedules that came out after have me cut from around 35 hours a week to 16.5.

Not only is this not enough to live on, but if it stays this way I will lose eligibility.

My store manager claims to have “automated” the schedule like he usually does, but these cuts didn’t happen until he and I had a heated conversation a couple weeks prior.

Any clue how I should handle this? I got to pay bills plus now even more reliant on hours with my healthcare in question.

Thanks!

Benefits are calculated every 6 months. So one week with low hours won't hurt you, you just need a total number of hours over that entire 6 month span.

Also automated schedules are lazy. And SMs who just copy forward from last week's schedule need to hear from their baristas and their DMs that it's a lazy obnoxious habit that will make people burn out.

I didn’t know it was called a copy forward. However it is the strategy that our SM uses and has been using since I came on with the company.

It’s also why it makes me more suspicious of the situation. Never had an issue up until recently.

My guess is your SM copy forwarded then changed the schedule to accommodate a request off or someone else's availability change, and didn't check to see how many hours you got.

Some DMs want managers using the copy forward

If the SM then goes in and checks for conflicts and problems then that's ok, but I've seen lots of SM copy forward, approve a time off request and not notice that they had a 3 hour SSV coverage gap.

Yeah I was asked if I used copy forward and I just went 'nope'... That's the most interaction ive had with the program

I have put my number in the back of other stores by calling and if they need coverage they call me. Picking up hours and having open availability really helps. If I get scheduled under I look for hours else where. If you work 16 one week and 30 the other that’s 40 hours in two weeks which will keep your eligibility. Starbucks is never guaranteed full time for baristas. I’m a 7 year partner worked a lot of stores and yes hour cuts are always an issue and something unfortunately you do have to go looking for yourself sometimes. Good luck!

See I guess maybe I should of gone into detail. I looked at the hours compared to other partners and I was the only one who suffered minus one other partner. It makes me suspicious just after having that heated conversation as well. I have open availability so that’s not an issue either.

Managers do tend to “retaliate” even tho they aren’t suppose too. My manager is giving the girl he doesn’t enjoy 6 hours a week. Everyone knows why. It’s ridiculous. I can’t wait to transfer. I have 37 when I want like 20 cause I have another job. 🙄

Yeah, the trick is proving it sadly. Otherwise it’s my word against theirs :/
