starbucks + physical health issues/disabilities (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by celestineleh
i recently had to quit a starbucks franchise job because they refused to accommodate me (and other employees) for my disability. i have POTS which makes it hard for me to be on my feet for prolonged periods of time and i need to drink lots of water. i loved working at starbucks and was fine making it through 4-6 hour shifts but after that, i needed to sit down for 5 or so mins and drink some water. the issue was we only had 1 person working at most times so it would be hard for me to sit down when there was a long line and we weren't allowed to drink water unless we were on break. i get where they were coming from but i couldnt physically or mentally handle it. im now on medication and am getting better but im still concerned. i keep getting told to work a less physically demanding job, but at 17, those arent easy to come by. and im able to work for an average shift length, i just need some minor adaptations. now with all of that out of the way, my question is: to those with disabilities who work at starbucks, are they accommodating about it? i hope this doesnt come off as arrogant or stuck up and demanding, but im very concerned about how to handle this situation. thank you for the input!

TLDR: is starbucks accommodating for those with disabilities?

Corporate locations will literally never have only one person working. Get yourself to a moderate or even high volume store and they will have no problem covering your needed breaks because there will always be enough people around to cover or absorb the impact of one less person for 5-10 minutes

Sorry that happened to you! But starbucks is very accommodating in my experience! In canada at least we get breaks every 2/3 hours and you just have to step off the floor to drink water for food safety. Because drinking water is a fundamental need idk how they could justify denying you that!!

I work at a busy store that only is getting busier. I also have a mental and physical disability. My store is accommodating to my needs and restrictions. My store manager made sure that the shift leads are aware of the conditions I have and if I get overwhelmed or in pain then I can take a breather and sit. You definitely would never be alone in a corporate store and they should have no trouble accommodating you unless you get a store with poor management. Before you apply, stop by during a slow time either shortly after opening or closer to close and talk to the employees and they’ll tell you the truth about their store
