cash out sick time and vacation when leaving the company? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by donalson
so after 3 1/2 years at starbucks it's getting to be time for me to move on.

looking at my pay stub it looks like I have about 45 hrs of sick time (which I'm never able to use because calling in can't happen at our store because we are so understaffed)... when I leave will I be able to cash that out?... can I just have my SM tack it on to bring me to an even 40/hr a week until it's used up? do I give him a 3 or 4 week notice and tell him I'll be calling in for the last 2 weeks to use up those hrs (I wouldn't but...)... I've read different things about getting these hrs... I'm just not willing to leave over $400 on the table that I am rightfully owed because I was a good little barista and worked even when I was struggling with mental health issues and such.

what about with the left over vacation time... will that cash out or is that also needed to be used?

you can’t go over 40 hours so if in your last pay period week you work 30 hours each week, you can only use 10 hours of vacation time each week. same goes for sick time, but not all managers will even let you use that since you weren’t sick. If you’re still working 3 weeks, just use some of the hours each week to bring you up to 40

Vacation time you can use just by requesting a day off and writing in 8 hours vacation time in the punch log.

Sick time in theory is only meant for whenever you miss work for medical reasons, some SMs are more loose and just let you use it, others require you to have a qualifying reason.
