Buckle up y’all. We going for a ride.(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by P_2_P
So today, we had an opener and a mid call out. So it was myself the 6 am mid and the other opener for a good while. It was steady but I wouldn’t call it busy for the morning. Nothing the 2 of us couldn’t handle.
Anyway, so this woman, who was probably behind 5 people, and I make eye contact. I smile and acknowledge her she shoots me a dirty scowl, rolls her flounder spaced eyes at me, and turns her nose up at me. Strike one.
Now she’s behind the person ordering so I ask if I can get her drink started, and she goes “yes finally it’s about time.” Strike 2.
4 shots of espresso venti cup, 1.5 stevia and LIGHT 2%. She stressed the light 2% part.
Pulling the shots and just overall annoyed with this woman I probably gave her 1.75 stevias hahaha And like a splash of 2%. Drink at the hand off.
Woman trots her way to the hand off. Immediately demands a straw for her strawless lid. Whatever.
“I asked for 2% milk, I’m gonna need much more than that.” Okay. So I splash in some more milk. She’s still not happy. “This is ridiculous I’ll tell you when to stop.”
Strike 3. Over it.
So I ask her would you prefer i just fill the cup almost like a latte. She ignores me. So I begin to fill up the cup because I’m starting to have drinks back up at this point.
“That’s too much milk, you’re gonna have to remake that and that was very rude.”
I dump the drink and shes asking to speak to the manager. I said the manager isn’t here but I’ll be more than happy to grab the supervisor for you. At this point I also notice I’m out of stevia, and with no one to help I run to the back, tell my supervisor I’m being rude and a guest would like to speak with her. I also notice that all the stevia is at the condiment bar.
So I hear her running her mouth about how she’s never been treated so rudely at a Starbucks before how she used to run the children’s section at a big department store and how we needed more people. Blah blah blah. She acknowledges she knows we have 2% at the condiment bar but “prefers we do it.”
“Now I’m just standing her not knowing what’s going on, or if my drink is being made or not. This is insane how long this is taking.”
My supervisor is trying to talk to her to remedy this issue asking if she would prefer she make her drink. Whatever whatever.
I finally snap “ma’am your last shots are pulling I just had to grab stevia. It’ll only be a few moment.”
Ice the shots. And walk over to the handoff with 2% in my hand, okay let’s try this again. I’m trickling in the milk at this point. And I shit you not she told me to stop where I had originally filled the cup. This cheap bitch just wanted a latte.
My supervisor was like I saw how much milk she asked her for. She’s an idiot. Fuck her.
I was so upset I was shaking.
Rant over
PS
I GAVE HER DECAF

NSFW Sensitive disclaimer
Unpopular Opinion probably:
If that lady caught the wrong person on the wrong day and acted the same way; I could see someone actually breaking and killing themselves over an exchange like this. People should be punished for this type of behavior (probably not death) but definately forced removal from the building. If you want to argue about a flopped exchange of goods (money for coffee), you can do it in a civilized way without acting like a 3 year old.
pantyescobar8 points3y ago
there should be a clause that allows me, personally, to throw hands and not face assault charges. you can run your mouth all you want but only if we can scrap in the parking lot after
lewabwee4 points3y ago
So it’s definitely not cool to wish death on someone, or whatever that person said, and I don’t think suicide is super likely or likely enough to act as a reasonable deterrent to this type of behavior but I will say I can see people having strong reactions (not that strong) to customers who complain to managers and supervisors because those people always in some sense represent, intentionally or unintentionally, a threat to the worker’s livelihood. I mean there are always a variety of individual circumstances at play, and it’s super difficult to get fired from Starbucks but from the customers POV you never really know what those circumstances you’re inserting yourself into are or what effect you’ll have in the short and long term. I always have a strong initial reaction to that shit, especially when I know it’s bullshit, because it’s not at all cool to pull that over a coffee.
Which isn’t to say there aren’t legitimate reasons for a customer to complain but as a supervisor if I’m not there it can be hard to tell but whether or not, I believe a customer is entirely due to bias, earned or completely unfair, that I have towards an employee. False complaints are just not cool.
Not to mention some of these people rather explicitly want the employee to get fired. What if they do and can’t get another job? They’re just cruel.
GaggleGuy4 points3y ago
I totally agree. I do strongly believe that there needs to be more leeway in being able to say things like "hey I understand you're unhappy, and I'm willing to work with you about your problem, but you have to respect me as a person. Otherwise I have to ask you to leave." Cuz at the end of the day, if I said that as an SSV myself my manager would have a cow.
I guess what I'm saying is that we're always told to go by the "it's just coffee" mindset. It should be okay to remind those more aggressive/borderline violent customers that we're people and not machines.
lewabwee2 points3y ago
As a supervisor form another store that isn’t yours I will tell you that in order to maintain 3rd place values you are allowed to insist overly hostile customers who are degrading you calm down. It’s just that there really isn’t a clear line and if your supervisor and manager won’t back you up that sucks. But if a customer is, let’s say, screaming at you that’s disrupting the experience for other customers and you can ask the yelly one to calm down or leave.
I don’t know where the line really is with us but if someone is insulting one of my baristas I’ll interject and tell them that’s not appropriate.
gaayrat2 points3y ago
If there was criminal punishment for rude behavior it would be horribly abused. Let's keep the cops out of it
prvlg2 points3y ago
Y’all are outta pocket 💀💀
prvlg8 points3y ago
Eh I think that’s taking it a bit too far. I get it’s a bitchy customer but death is smth else. If she burned her tongue that’d be funny, but anything past that is iffy.
Ziaheart6 points3y ago
Burn her tongue on her iced latte without ice? That'd be impressive. And also no doubt karma exists.
prvlg2 points3y ago
I was just tryna think of a dif alternative
nightkat893 points3y ago
Sorry, but this is totally fucked up. You wish harm on someone because they’re a rude customer?
Holy hell...
StormTheParade2 points3y ago
Come on, we have like three rules here. Let's not wish death on someone.
Supadupastein1 points3y ago
I said I was joking but at the same time saying she’s a right biotch
StormTheParade0 points3y ago
You said you were *half* joking and either way, it's just not okay. You can call someone all sorts of names but there's zero need to wish for their death :/
Supadupastein1 points3y ago
I didn’t really mean it, sorry
wandering_mind_10 points3y ago
Some people seriously just want to watch world burn around them. They have such terrible ways of viewing reality! Wish it weren’t true, but some people are just wicked 🤢
blondiebarista7 points3y ago
Omg yes the ending
b2m0k6 points3y ago
DECAF. lol. My favourite remedy to jerk customers.
ianbz3 points3y ago
Well technically you have to charge her for more than 4 oz of milk so that could help you next time 👀
annr133 points3y ago
i wish i was also in line waiting for my drink so i could tell her off for being such a bitch
maemac2 points3y ago
And that sweet sweet ending we were all waiting for

I’m down
nightkat891 points3y ago
I love how I’m getting downvoted for saying I won’t fuck with peoples drinks.
I get people are assholes guys. I get that a lot. I’ve been in retail for 17 years and going on 6 months with the siren. However we have to be the better person (even if we are rolling our eyes at them)
nightkat89-6 points3y ago
Decaffing people for being rude only lowers yourself to their level.
No matter how mean or rude someone is to me, I will never intentionally fuck with their order.
P_2_P [OP]1 points3y ago
You’re obviously a better person than I am. Respectable
nightkat892 points3y ago
I wouldn’t say I’m a better person than anyone. We all have our strengths and weaknesses. I guess it’s just one of those “line to cross” things? I don’t know
IcePhoenix961 points3y ago
She crossed the line and if this were a local business she would've been laughed out the store. Instead underpaid and overworked baristas are forced to bend over backwards for assholes like her in the name of STARBUCKS^tm . So if the little recourse or karma headed her way is her not getting the caffeine that she definitely does not deserve, then thats far less than the emotional weight and distress she caused by being a massive dick to the barista for no damn reason other than her life sucks.
nightkat891 points3y ago
Listen, I get it you’re angry. That person should not have acted that way at all. I am not in any way trying to justify their actions, but what if someone took something you did as rude and spat in your food or modified your order without your consent?
Two wrongs don’t make a right and someone has to take the higher ground no matter how much it sucks
