Insane amount of mobile orders(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by rendercilla
My store always has a lot of mobile orders come in. Today one person placed a mobile order for 11 drinks - some fraps, some refreshers, some lattes. Just a minute later that same person placed another mobile order for 5 more drinks. Then a few hours later that same person placed another mobile order for 9 more drinks. I'm not making this up. There needs to be a limit to how many drinks you order per day through the app.

Maybe not a limit -let’s be fair, corporate would never ever do that- but a warning when ordering 10+ drinks that it could take a little while would be nice.

Now thats an idea-- like at 5 or so drinks it would give the warning would be a good idea

Yes! Don’t food delivery services also give an eta? It’s only logical for customer and supplier.

My store got a mobile order about 2 weeks ago for 20 grande pikes and 20 bacon and Gouda sandwiches during peak at 7:00 AM. The guy showed up less than 5 minutes later and was visibly annoyed that his food wasn’t ready. Thankfully he only ordered black coffees for the drinks, but he could’ve just ordered a couple of the travelers.

Wow, yeah, that's a little ridiculous.

I'm just a customer married to a Starbucks partner, but I'm not quite sure I understand the problem here. More drinks ordered means more profit for your store, which ultimately leads to job security. Limiting the number of items a store can sell, whether in person or via mobile order, seems counterintuitive in my opinion. While I'm sure it's a pain to make a crap ton of drinks at once, it is an increase to your store's profit margin. I would hope that this particular customer is at least tipping you well.

As someone who worked in a Sbux with the highest mobile order volume in a multi state area I don't really care about the profits of our store...its just exhausting and emotionally draining. ultimately at a certain point we're just not equipt to handle the volume of drinks that we get. And having to take the fall for a 15-25+ minute wait because someone made a huge order during a peak certainly doesnt help. Starbucks doesn't grant job security either way (over hiring in order to anticipate turnovers and save money, never truly guaranteed full time hours, labor cuts). Tips aren't based on the amount of orders we get...we have a ridiculously low tip rate as well....its all about environment and locaton tbh

I get that and as a customer who generally mobile orders 99.9% of the time, I totally appreciate the effort that goes into the whole process. The most drinks I've ever ordered at one time has been 4 and that rarely ever happens. I know it's not all rainbows and unicorns like corporate likes to portray in the media and I know that a lot of sweat and tears go into the daily rigamarole of a Starbucks work day. However, in considering the OP's statement, what difference does it make if that person mobile orders or comes into the store 3 separate times to make those same orders? It's still going to affect your wait time and everything else the same way a mobile order would, right? Either way, it's a lot of work and I applaud all of you that work there. I know I couldn't do it and I know all the stress that my spouse goes through.

You can only ring up people so fast... So your Cafe bar can generally be ahead of the curve and stay on top of drinks. You can't account for Mobile orders. You can go from having 0 drinks to having 15 drinks without a single person walking through the doors. If someone comes up front and orders 15 drinks you can recognize that and start preemptively making them before they finish the order.

There’s more labor (2 people) and time to ring up 15 drinks then 15 Mobile drinks. If “being ahead of the curve” means ring up drink, then make said drink, you’re not ahead of the curve your using lag time between what the person is ordering and when the sticker comes out. Which is why mobile orders are a thing. More effort is placed on the customer to ask for what they want and only 1 partner is involved in making the drink.
So... no.... 🤔🧐

Not sure why everyone is downvoting you... It's a legitimate question.
The answer(s): the problem with excessive mobile orders is they destroy the customer experience for anyone coming I to cafe/drive by driving up wait times through the roof. While mobile orders are indeed profit. However, a lot of profit is lost when customers have an awful experience and either switch to another type of coffee shop and/or a different Starbucks.
The solution I would say is to limit the total volume of drinks which can be mobile ordered in a certain time frame. This is how we could circumvent the issue of people splitting their orders into smaller blocks or anything like that, while still allowing a proper balance between mobile and on-site orders.

Wow, down voted for appreciating the hard work you all put in and trying to understand how things work? Didn't see that coming.
[deleted]14 points3y ago
I personally didn't down vote you, and i totally understand your want to understand your Significant Others work related issues but this subreddit is supposed to be a venting space for frustrated partners and ex-partners. Please read the top post on this subreddit.

Why are you on this subreddit if you aren't a partner?
kaotica79-15 points3y ago
As mentioned in my original post, I'm married to a partner. Although I don't work for Starbucks, I sometimes feel like I do because I hear all about the issues and everything else that goes along with it. This sub is helpful in knowing that she isn't the only one struggling and that she isn't alone out there.

The problem is that it holds up the queue for other people, especially if the store has single print machines.

We got a DT bar and a Cafe/Mobile bar. I feel awful when I get people ordering in cafe who have to wait 10 mins for their drink because all the mobile orders printed before theirs. It's also frustrating for anyone solo baring because you have people upset that their drink isn't being made, always going off like, "why is it taking so long, I only ordered two drinks". Great good for you but Susan here decided to buy drinks for the office on mobile just before you walked in, sorry I don't have your sticker.
captmarksparrow5 points3y ago
We just moved over to the single print machines, and I'm not a fan. You have no clue how many drinks are in the queue, and it just leaves any cafe orders high and dry until you either pull all of the mobile orders to find the cafes, or you work your way through the mobile orders. Great stuff.
