I am the primary closer at my store and have been for years. Be prepared for a thankless job. You gotta make it self-fullfilling, otherwise you are gunna be miserable. Try and own your shift and make your custoners prefer nights, that's what I did. Now I have custoners who call to see whenI come in, and won't come in before me 😁
Good luck, congratulations, and rock on dude!

Are you allowed to give information about when people shifts begin? It's not like dangerous?
nobullshitplz 10 points 3y ago
I don’t know what Starbucks official policy is for that but I usually just give vague answers like “I think they’ll be here tomorrow.” and I wouldn’t give a time or anything. Just to be safe. If they’re asking me about the manager, then I’ll just point them to the condiment bar which has the manager’s card.
faetalflaws 7 points 3y ago
The only time I answered those questions was about “When will the manager be here?” type deals, and even then it would be vague, like tomorrow morning, or afternoon, something like that.
At my old store we had a lot of issues with stalkers and harassment, so at least at store level we had a rule that you can’t even say if someone works there, let alone when they do.
Now, if they’re asking about you and you’re comfortable giving that out, that’s awesome!
PlantKrys 10 points 3y ago
At my store, we prefer not to because we have way too many stalkers. 👀

Not accurate times, but my customers all know that I usually have a 230-1030 shift, so they just ask if I'm closing.

I actually enjoy night shifts a lot too as a barista, so here's to hoping that stays true as a shift. Thanks for the advice!

SM here, when I was a SSV I was a 5 day a week closer so I make sure to close at least once a week as manager 👍
brit_666 13 points 3y ago
you sound like an amazing SM, your store is lucky to have you!
Jeffuk88 5 points 3y ago
Aww thanks 😳
colonade17 4 points 3y ago
Thank you for doing that. I hope your team realizes what an amazing commitment that is from you. It really makes a difference for closers to regularly see their SM in person. After lots of coaxing I was finally able to get my SM to commit to closing once per month.
Jeffuk88 4 points 3y ago
Starbucks standard is that managers must schedule themselves for 1 close and 1 open per month. But most dont
colonade17 1 points 3y ago
Do you know where I can find that standard? I just tried searching on the hub, but maybe I'm using the wrong search terms.

'store management scheduling principles'

You might not have access? But the huns search parameters are also weird.

I close every so often at my store and I primarily open as the shift. I’m annoyed by both day parts then. But believe I’m trying to close as an opener and vice Versa. The different day parts don’t always like that but it’s effective. It pays when we close and the openers feel set up properly. Gives them time to clean and maintain easier. It’s a snowball effect; ask for feedback from your opening crew and give them and mids yours as well. Team effort for sure but you got this!! Congrats!

Aww thank you! I wish the people in this subreddit had any idea how much your strength and encouragement gives me at work! You guys are the best!

Im an opener at my store and I know how they always complain about nights shifts and how they don’t clean properly ( I personally don’t do that because everybody does things differently). Last month though I got a taste of the night shift and honestly I fell in love with it. I wasn’t stressed about window times and I was able to connect with customers like the job entitles. Plus so much time to clean! Those nights that I closed the morning shifts never complained. I plan on asking for more evening shifts.

I actually had a very similar experience, I used to work 5a-2p every day and when I switched to nights I didn't wanna go back to mornings. I agree about it being way less stressful

I used to be the closing barista at my home store before I had my baby and moved out of state. Now I am the opening SSV at my new home store. Years of closimg makes me a better opening leader
colonade17 5 points 3y ago
Congrats.

For me the hardest part of closing was that my SM was usually out the door before I clocked in. So I had to schedule time to meet with them whenever I wanted to talk about anything. The openers and mid-shifts had the luxury of just being able to grab the SM for 5 minutes in the middle of their shifts. And because I only had 15 minutes overlap most days with the mid-shift I got almost no feedback on how things were going, or what I should improve on.

Speak up and ask for help. You're probably going to make some stupid mistakes (at least I did) but learn from them.

Same. Closing all week, 3 weeks out.

At this point idc bc I do what I can and I leave
RegularFrappuccino 3 points 3y ago
Yes! You clean everything but lord help you if you forget to stock some sugar or something
FaMulan358 2 points 3y ago
Yeah this was me until I befriended the main opener. Now we’re a united front against the midshifts. They get heat from both sides now and actually get their shit done.
RadHint 2 points 3y ago
Congrats!
