As someone who generally begins their shifts around 4-6am, and who was put on pre-closing and closing shifts for a couple of months, I notice a huge difference in the kind of partners who work those shifts. In general, I have older partners and more motivated partners working with me in the morning, and younger partners and partners who tend to slack off a lot in the evening and at night. At my store, most of the night shifts are enablers of this too. Working those shifts kills my back, I go home with pants wet from the sink loads the mids and mornings leave us, and we often leave late. I can't help but think that night crew culture is fucking around though, because I rarely work with people during those shifts who don't inexplicably slip into the back and chill on their phones while the shift does the same thing or something similar. Is this a shared experience? I changed shifts those months so I could see how I could help make the nights easier as an opener and vice versa. The night job is hard as shit and the morning shift is delightful. Why does that lead to people dicking around more often at night?

every store is different. My night crew is extremely solid, and has zero dicking around. For us the hardest job is the mid-shift, because after peak is over we still have lots of staff, but it's not obvious to them that there's lots of work that needs to get done, and if a SSV isn't right there to tell them to clean something they just stand there doing nothing.

This is something I definitely haven’t experienced. I work both, and closers have far more responsibilities that don’t allow us to slip to the back, unless we are staffed well and set up perfectly.

Yeah total opposite at my store

Same. The night crew breaks their backs picking up after morning crew because peak stops and they think “oh we aren’t busy anymore let’s dick around now I guess!!!”

It's definitely like this at my store. Except for me, most openers have been there a while (5+ years, one's been there 15 years!), while new folks seem to get concentrated into mid/closing shift. We are an extremely busy store, but lose most of our labor around midday, so the combo of green beans + fewer partners=disaster. Our evening SSV is also a complete waste of space, super lazy and has no leadership skills whatsoever, so that encourages lax behavior.
I usually work openings and dread working mids or evenings because everyone else is so "whatever" about doing their jobs.

I feel that. I was recently promoted to shift and had mostly been an opener and did clean plays Sunday night. Now that I’m mainly a closing shift, I can see why closers can dick around. At my store, a lot of the green beans and younger partners get out in night shifts instead of our busy mornings which is understandable but it also can feel like I’m babysitting sometimes while also tryna run a good close. It’s getting better but mostly it’s just making sure partners are really clear in what they need too be doing and that it is possible to clean and chat at the same time!

I’ve definitely seen crews that do that but my store is too busy to ever be doing nothing if anyone wants to be out on time

I know what your talking about. When it was me as a shift I never let that happen. But being at Starbucks for almost 7 freaking years that’s def how it goes at every store. It really takes a good shift to make sure things are getting done at night. That’s why I make sure I only promote and higher people who wanna work. I know exactly what your talking about. I would talk to your sm about what you see If it bothers you or want too because a rotation is needed. It also should def be showing on your customer scores that possibly mornings are way higher than evening. Hope the night time take it more seriously for you :)

One reason morning scores are higher than nights is staffing! It’s not possible for me to take orders, connect with someone in the window, and make 3 drinks per car while the shift is on register and bar support. Also not-so-happy hour is a thing...
mcr04142 points3y ago
My customer scores are fine with 3 part and the same. One of the busiest stores in the district in Chicago. It’s really about strong partners. :)
carzrule0 points3y ago
It could also be a lack of leadership. I believe anyone can be a strong partner, but if the leader isn’t behind them 100% they can’t be. How often do you work happy hour? I’m considered a strong partner at my store, and even happy hour makes me want to walk out.
mcr04140 points3y ago
I’m the store manager. I always work happy hour it’s not that serious
priyasingh252 points3y ago
we used to b like this but not anymore
AndrewtheRey1 points3y ago
My store has more people who want to close than we do day shift people. We have a ton of part timers with first shift (6a-2p) jobs who come work 3 or 4 pm until close. The day shifters are all pretty solid though. They are mostly college students and they care about getting things done

Completely the opposite for us. Openers have hardly any responsibilities (plus 3 openers vs 2 closers), finish their stuff and dick around on their phones. Night crew busts their asses, have way more responsibilities and get no thanks for it. Only complaints from openers when they miss one tiny thing they have easily could’ve done themselves.
