Policy help! (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by isaiiasi
Last I heard baristas weren’t allowed to do a trash run after sun down unless accompanied by another partner. Is this true? Has policy changed?

Yeah we have that rule at my store. Not to say we follow it. Sometimes there’s so much trash I just do a few garbage runs myself because it’s winter and it’s dark at 5pm and it’s trash mountain in the back room.

This is standard per the Store Operations Manual because it could be dangerous. However, many stores skirt this rule for various reasons; my first store did not do it because we were in a shopping center with 24/7 security and a well-lit residential area. My final store did not do it because you could literally stand in the doorway of the back door and toss trash in the dumpster lmao

I think its a combo of store security and barista safety. But if the SM says na, then na

We can see out the door to the dumpster so we’re pretty chill with it too

My last two stores did not enforce this rule. My current store doesn’t do trash runs if it’s dark out period. And when we get there in the morning it’s like the went from noon till night with not doing the trash. I never left openers with trash. Especially if the dumpster was right there. I think it really depends on safety.

It is policy and if your store is in an area that isn't totally safe it should definitely be enforced. Safety is definitely more important than a little trash

it's a very loosely enforced rule. The reasoning for the rule is that opening the door at night increases the risk of bugs or mice getting in the door, and there's a potential safety issue for baristas doing this out in the dark.

If those risks don't apply for some reason because there's no likely hazards, then I'm ok with being flexible.
