Woman orders 2 Mocha fraps, grande, in venti cups add a shot of espresso to each. So I get her V cups and a G cup to measure, and pour her lovely mixture from cup to cup so that she gets what she paid for. She flips out and tells me "they" ALWAYS give her the extra. So, the proper way to handle this is? Ugh, I hate cheap people...sigh
Lilium81642 points3y ago
Pay for a grande, get a grande.
lilBalzac-12 points3y ago
They ARE getting a grande even if you give them all if it. Unless you didn't follow the recipe at all, which is YOUR job, not the guests job. js
giantechidna11 points3y ago
.....a grande is 16 ounces? So even when the customer changes the recipe, you should still get 16 ounces.... Is, is this the customer replying😂?
lilBalzac1 points3y ago
No, I'm a shift. They pay for the shot they added, and which gets partly dumped out. We allow them the larger cup: what benefit do you, or the company get from dumping out the extra? The company loses money dumping extra cups in the trash and loses business by acting like guests are cheap (even if they are)... you guys get that we are selling our service and not just coffee beans and sugar?
dodofishman3 points3y ago
Bro I WISH we actually got paid *paid* for our service am I right lol ($9 over here)
giantechidna2 points3y ago
.... 1.5 ounces of espresso + 16 ounces does not a 24ounce drink make. How exactly are you making these fraps? I mean to each their own, but if I upsized every time there's some extra in a blender (which btw no one is putting in an extra cup to throw away, you just wrinse the pitcher??), I'd be passing out an akwardly not full drink that's the wrong size each time. Why not just keep it standard? Like if it's that amazing, Starbucks would make it policy. Shifts who make up their own standards and then punish you for not doing them are wild, I swear.
Torminatorii1 points3y ago
Wait what? Are you saying that more than what fits in the cup (maybe because it’s a layered drink or they changed it or you perhaps added a smidge too much ice) is also a grande? A grande is what fits in the cup...not what’s made in the blender let’s be real here. Now, yes, if you are consistently getting way too much left over on regular made drinks, you probably need to be retrained on how to make fraps, but that’s it.
lilBalzac-1 points3y ago
When you follow recipe for milk, ice base, etc then drop a shot in (that they pay for) that increases the amount of drink. Ingredients also vary in how they froth in blender or shaker. Matcha, for example, always fluffs more than a basic coffee frappe or iced latte. So they got the grande in the venti cup (which we allow on the POS and mobile app) so that extra (or part of their added shots) fit. What policy or business goal of Starbucks is advanced by looking that customer in the eye while pouring it out in the drain? How does angering that guest help you as a barista? Honest questions I'm asking. Be well.
colonade1727 points3y ago
I always dump out any extra left in the blended immediately, so that if they ask that question, I can just say I measured it and this is the correct amount to give you, and I can point to the black lines on the cup to explain how the recipe works. My SM doesn't really care how we handle it as long as the customer leaves feeling ok.
At my store usually those people just want lots and lots of whip cream.

Madame_Deadly26 points3y ago
Had a customer the other day ask for a grande caramel frappuccino with 3 shots in a trenta cup with no whip. I was thinking to myself which store are you going to where your drink fluffs up to a full 32oz lol
lilBalzac-5 points3y ago
They want all the drink AND they want room... yeah they are fussy, but so what? Mean or rude guests are one thing (I still try to kill them with kindness) but they do pay for the right to be fussy.
Ladysm1th6 points3y ago
Nah, this is in reference to people who order a smaller size within a larger cup because they want us to fill it up or make extra to fit in larger cup so they only have to pay the smaller cup amount. No one cares about people wanting room. It's those who are trying to get extra for free
lilBalzac3 points3y ago
The OP describes putting the correct recipe for a grande (grande milk, grande pumps, add shot) and dumping out anything that won't fit in a grande cup.
dodofishman2 points3y ago
Yeah I don’t mind if you ask for a venti cup for a grande drink cus you want the room filled with whip or something, people who ask for it fully expecting it to be filled are so ENTITLED AAAAA I’ll do it bc I don’t get paid enough to fight it and it’s not coming outta my paycheck but....it’s the principle of the thing ya know
lilBalzac-4 points3y ago
You understand our business model, right? I don't think you do. What we sell is 65% service 35% product. We only thrive if we delight the people. Customer service is not for everyone. You have to enjoy fulfilling requests that are often ridiculous.
Thegreatithy21 points3y ago
The proper way is exactly what you did. I would defend your actions here as a supervisor. Best response to when people say "they always do this" is, well they were doing it against policy and I am doing it properly to ensure your drink is as you ordered it.
dancingfalconn17 points3y ago
Agreed. Sometimes if a customer tries to tell me “well this particular Starbucks always does such and such for me” but they are being especially rude or pushy, I occasionally tell them “I’m sorry, but that is against policy, they aren’t supposed to do that so I’ll be reaching out to that store manager to let them know their team is doing this so we can uphold company standards.” And they always panic cause they think they’ve gotten their usual favorite baristas in trouble. Truth is I’m not gonna call, but it’s kind of funny and usually brings the customer back down to being reasonable.
Thegreatithy5 points3y ago
I actually love that!!

My sm gave me the best cue card which was to reply with “Would you mind telling me who did this for you because that’s actually against company policy. We’ll need to correct this so that it doesn’t happen again.” 9 times out of 10 the customer suddenly either couldn’t come up with a name or description of the employee, or it “must have been another location.” I’m not saying this is foolproof but if they still persist with throwing a tantrum just repeat that what they’re asking is against policy and then go get your sm and let them handle it from there.
lilBalzac-3 points3y ago
Oh yeah? Where can I find that policy?
lilBalzac2 points3y ago
So you are wasting extra cups to ensure that you can throw the "extra" away? That is way more petty than my cheapest customer. Also, the way we "ensure they got what they paid for" is the drink recipe. Correct recipe may yield slightly extra volume on blended and shaken drinks. How does using extra disposables cups and treating demanding guests poorly helping our business or the atmosphere in our stores?
dodofishman3 points3y ago
Ok so what do you do when they ask for a tall caramel Frappuccino in a venti cup?
lilBalzac2 points3y ago
I put the recipe in for a tall, but I don't dump out any "extra" while the angry guests watch!! I especially don't dump out partial drinks with paid added shots mixed in! Unless I am slammed on bar, I will ask if the want a larger cup so extra shots fit. Every time a guest asks me for the "extra" frappe, they meant "Don't dump out what you already blended" not "give me a full venti recipe for tall price." I have heard many crazy requests, and have many ask for the "extra" but not once did they expect a full venti recipe. Maybe this is more of a communication thing. Many guests actually are horrified when they see us pouring food down the drain, not out if greed, but due to waste. Be well everyone, sorry if I came off difficult myself.
anastalei1 points3y ago
Quit wasting cups and use the cold bar measuring cup. Also lighten up and assume the best. They probably want the entirety of the shot they paid for. If policy was against giving excess in a larger cup they would make small drinks in large cups not a thing.
If you ever left extra room for an affogato shot, then you are a hypocrite. You should just pour it over the sides and get it all over your hand so you aren’t being stingy with the drink.
They policy is actually against giving excess in an additional cup because people would order a tall Frappuccino with extra milk and extra pumps and get a drink for free, since there is no way to up-charge it on the till. The excess is built into Frappuccinos to avoid shortchanging customers, not so we can throw it away and make customers upset for no reason at all.
masochistic_brat-4 points3y ago
Why are u guys so pressed about like 5 oz of frap? Sometimes there's extra, this person noticed so they asked for the larger cup. If anything it's wasting less product.
sweetashunny_0 points3y ago
If you’ve the recipe to standard there shouldn’t BE any extra.
PhillyCSpires-2 points3y ago
Here's my two cents - yes, the customer may be (mildly) wrong. But is the argument worth disenfranchising the customer? Often times the amount made can easily fill out the rest or the majority of a cup. In my opinion if Starbucks was striving to avoid this situation, they wouldn't offer the grande-in-a-venti cup option even on their own ordering app. Frankly, this isn't about any one side being "wrong" as much as it is not creating a customer service or optics issue by stubbornly and possibly malignantly clinging to what is exactly "right." As a customer I don't ask for extras, but admittedly more locations than not don't mind filling out the venti cup so it doesn't look comically disproportionate. I oddly find the places that will stringently "fight" you over proportions are generally lacking in other areas of customer service and are tone deaf when delegating their point of view. The customer who is paying $5/$6 a drink possibly several times a day isn't seeking an argument or even an impasse with the barista making the drink. And trust me, even displaying bemusement or confusion - not even outright complaining- can net you a condescending and nasty response at certain locations. At that point, the problem is becoming far more that you are alienating a repeat customer and far less that you are saving whatever money by micro-managing the proportion of drinks.
