tall rant // kinda dumb (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by sicksiren
so ive worked at starbucks around 8 months now, and for 2 years before i started here i religiously got acrylics nails done.

it makes me super unconfident that i cant do anything with my nails because i work here. i understand where the rule comes from and the safety behind it, it just makes me so sad. and i understand how it may sound stupid but my nails made me feel pretty and now i feel so bleh whenever i see my nails.

id even take acrylics with no polish if they'd allow it anything is better than how it feels with them naked. idk just a thought i guess.

Foodservice might not be your jam.

I painted my nails a lot so I can understand how it feels to suddenly have to stop doing it. But! On my days off I wear polish or some fun press on fake nails. Maybe that's the key for you too! Especially the press ons

It’s not dumb at all!

I’ve gotten my nails done religiously ever since I got my first job at sixteen and could pay for it myself.

I’m almost 26 now and honestly every time I look at my hands I’m just reminded of my ugly, dumb nails and how terrible they look without any sort of decoration/polish. It becomes a part of your personality, you know? Having a cute little manicure becomes part of your look.

I never got my nails done but I have naturally strong, pretty nails so I always grew them and groomed them and I loved looking at my hands. I also always wore a lot of jewelry and styled my long hair and always smelled like some delicious combination of perfumes...I work in a tarbucks and I was put in sbux by force, not choice. It has completely stripped away my image and broken down my self esteem. I hate it. But I'm a really good manager and barista and I love my team so it's a tough spot. Point being, I feel you, 100%.

ahh, thats so sad. i hope you find other ways to make yourself feel good out of the bux/ on your days off! luckily im still in high school so im off often enough to still wear jewelry and perfume and style my hair, but i definitely feel for you lovely :( the things we do for starbucks i guess

yeah i could look into it, thanks for the advice! it'll be hard on weeks that i work multiple days in a row, but i could probably find something for my off weeks.

I used to do press-ons every time I had 2+ days off. I'm hard on my nails so the longest I could make them last was 4 days anyway. They don't actually look that bad! Great for events or nights out when you need a confidence boost.

I never do acrylics but I used to always paint my nails/ get gel. 2 years into sbux and I still look down at my dry, non polished, reptile skin hands in sadness T_T

I literally just had to take off my first set of acrylics (for non work reasons) and I felt so sad. It was one of the first things that made me feel super happy after getting out of the food service industry.

i’ve been doing acrylics and then SNS for 8 years. this is the first time i’ve not had anything on my nails and i completely understand. not to mention part of the reason i got manicures was because i have naturally thin nails that always break. it’s a suckfest these days for sure.
