Applying to Starbucks For the Fertility Benefits. Looking For Advice. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Terry_Hesticle
Hello Starbucks baristas and crew. I am 32 years old and currently employed as a project manager for an internet marketing company in California.

My husband and I have been trying to have a baby for five years and while I wouldn’t fully mind wiping out our savings to pay $20k for IVF, I read that Starbucks offers IVF coverage for even part time employees.

My question is I would be leaving my successful job that clearly pays much more. I’m worried during the interview I will be asked why I’m leaving my old job and I don’t think “I’m in it for the insurance” is a great answer.

Do any of you have experience with this? Are any of you hiring managers that could offer insight?

I have worked as a waitress before in a high stress location. I love Starbucks and am confident that I would rock this job, but can’t figure out what to say in the likely event this is brought up.

Thank you so much for your help, any and all insight is greatly appreciated.

So, I took on this job as a part time job for health benefits, because my main job doesn't offer health insurance and I pay an outrageous amount on Marketplace. I was clear with my hiring manager that I would need 20 hours to get the benefits and she was cool with it. I mean, it's really a "benefit" to the company that you are desperate to work for the benefits offered. (Not saying you are in particular desperate--I'm just saying I came into this job wanting affordable health insurance and knowing what I needed to do to get there.)

That being said, these benefits don't kick in for 6+ months.

I'm quitting after about 2.5 months. I unknowingly picked the most high volume store in the district and we are on peak for literally 12 hours a day. It is insane. The pay for our area starts at $9.50/hr but I make $23/hr at my other job.

It wasn't worth it for me. Even if it was my only job, I'd be taking a huge pay cut, the job is incredibly stressful and unrewarding, the company as a whole doesn't give a shit about baristas, and our shift supervisors have always been cracking the whip for us to be faster faster faster. My body hurts from standing, leaning over, being hunched over a computer. My ears are constantly ringing from how loud it is behind bar. I have done coffee jobs before and this has been the worst.

If you are able, I would advise you to start out part time and see if it's really something you can see yourself doing for a year or more. But are you planning on working for the company for a long time? Is the gap in your resume going to be a disadvantage when you leave the company? Just some things to think about. All the best to you.

Benefits enrollment starts after your third full month of working an average 20 hrs a week. So it's four months to get them, not 6+ months
