Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

We should probably pressure the company for more sick days and coverage right now. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by himynametopher
With the rise of Coronavirus, it is a matter of public safety that if we feel sick, we do not come into work. The pressure put on us to find coverage when sick creates an environment where it is difficult to call out without feeling guilt or pressure from management to come in. On top of that, Starbucks should allocate disaster pay to anyone who works for the company that has contracted Coronavirus. The financial burden of being sick could cause baristas to come in despite having a contagious virus. Baristas should not have to worry about losing pay for being quarantined and having to worry about being able to pay rent on top of medical bills. We, as baristas of Starbucks, must raise our concerns for public safety and make sure Starbucks puts health before profits!

Nahhhh...just don’t touch personal cups. Handle their cash all you want and go grab their brewed coffee/make their food...BUT NO PERSONAL CUPS. That saves us all... s/

I keep fucking thinking about this constantly and I swear this job has give me a fear if germs I have never experienced before.
Panik963 5 points 3y ago
They literally just cancelled our store meeting blaming coronavirus...I can’t even take this company serious anymore...

My manager does not let anyone work when they’re sick and finds coverage for anyone who is sick. Should be the same for all, I think its already part of the policy for this?
PurpleTIEFighter 36 points 3y ago
Lol. We have to find our own coverage or suffer through the day. Callouts will only have people talking shit.
Tangofett4 13 points 3y ago
I'm a shift, and what I heard at my meeting with the DM was "every excuse is a valid excuse"
That's how I take all call ins
PurpleTIEFighter 3 points 3y ago
I wish. From my experience we have to explain why we're calling in and that alone makes me uncomfortable. Then if you get really candid it just leads to other people making fun of you behind your back for valid health issues or whatever else happened. It's one of the only things I'd change about my store's culture.
waanderlxst 13 points 3y ago
I’d rather have someone callout than get the whole team sick.
PurpleTIEFighter 7 points 3y ago
Seriously. I've seen partners made fun of behind their backs for calling out with legitimate and VERY INFECTIOUS health issues, I don't understand how people can be so callous when we're supposed to be a 'family'.

If youre manager is making you do this then he/she is not following policy. My manager did this too but I stood up for myself and reported her to corporate.
PurpleTIEFighter 3 points 3y ago
I'm on the fence about reporting it (anonymously of course). I don't know why I feel so uncomfortable at the thought but I do.
dodofishman 4 points 3y ago
Don’t let the Stockholm syndrome grab hold of you haha this job does not genuinely care about you, so you should at least make sure they’re following the policies that ARE in place to protect you.
Assiqtaq 4 points 3y ago
Just because that is the official policy does not mean it is actually followed by every manager.
waanderlxst 5 points 3y ago
Report it to your DM
Assiqtaq 2 points 3y ago
When I did I was poo poo'd. By corporate. Basically told I was surely imagining it, could prove nothing, snd wasn't allowed access to company paperwork l in ke my own schedule. So not real big on counting on HR.
crzyshiba 2 points 3y ago
Wait report what? Idk if we want to call out sick we need to try to find coverage if we can’t oh well we gotta in.
DeGarmo2 3 points 3y ago
Idk how you find coverage when no one is willing to work :(

Unionize
fettacheenie 11 points 3y ago
actually the policy is “Well A B and C are sick too and they still came in, why should you get to stay home?”
CriticalSheep 9 points 3y ago
I have a chest cold and I'm opening tomorrow. I've been sick since Tuesday so I'm pretty sure I'm not contagious anymore but I'm still going in while technically sick. Because I don't have a choice. No one else can cover for me because we're low on staff and labor.
PSEyyyy 9 points 3y ago
based off of where you live, it may be illegal for them to force you to find coverage for a shift you’re sick for. it becomes their responsibility, which is what your upper level management is there for
Zuzuchic 4 points 3y ago
Sick pay, sure. More coverage? Coverage is based on sales. Wouldn't make sense to ask for more coverage.
