I’m not a minor but I’m in college and I understand that!! I always get a lot of attitude when I get called in and I say no because I have homework. No offense to those who make Starbucks their career, but not everyone is as invested as you, and this job isn’t our top priority.

exactly! i understand that its hard to find adults looking for a job like starbucks, but like my manager keeps hiring high school and college students the complaining about availability and not picking up extra shifts ect. and then to spite those of us who cut our availability or call out sick, she'll cut me down to 10 or less hours the first two weeks after i make any availability change. so stressful

It makes no sense to me to spite people like that. If you’re a manager and you’re willfully not utilizing the time certain partners have to give, you still need to supply employees for those hours anyway — so aren’t you/your shifts the ones getting screwed in the end?

Even if Starbucks *is* your career/life’s passion, having boundaries with your work is a reasonable and necessary part of life. I think a lot of jobs out there pressure their employees to compromise their boundaries. It’s not OK. I’m still working on feeling comfortable setting and maintaining boundaries myself.

Absolutely not at my store. Our store manager is very accommodating for both uni and high school students. They should not be giving you attitude about needing time to care for your education.

With that said I do recommend trying to cram in some homework during your breaks and/or your commute if you can. It certainly helped me when I was in high school.

Just remember that above all else your health/mental health and safety come first. Don’t overwork yourself and don’t be afraid to (politely) put your foot down if you’re being forced to work more than you can.

Wait calling days off as in you request days off or you call out because you have homework?

no like request days off. i had a school field trip that i had to go on after school and called off the day and she gave me like no hours for 2 weeks to spite me because of it.
