customers reaching over the counter for straws (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by gappedteeth
does anyone else have to constantly deal with customers reaching over the counter to grab straws? i work in a pretty small kiosk location and we keep the straws on the other side of a clear partition where we keep our lids, but customers regularly reach over to grab straws instead of asking and it drives me absolutely insane. (old people LOVE to grab straws for their hot drinks?? not really sure why????)

Sometimes it just be like that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ it used to drive me insane, but now it only annoys me a little. The sooner you get over it, the better it is for your mental health; you're not getting paid enough to care.

P.S. old people love straws for a few reasons: sensitive teeth, don't wanna stain teeth, dont wanna mess up lipstick on nonexistent lips, can't lift the cup up that far, etc. They also probably don't realize they're not rated for hot beverages, and could possibly be leaching chemicals into their body.

Do you have a shelf under the main counter you can put them on? I totally feel you on this. I get so frustrated with people reaching over the counter to grab stopper like they’re right next to the sink so it’s just a hot water burn ready to happen. Also it’s a health code violation

At least straws are wrapped-- I bitch out any customer who reaches for lids and makes me throw out an entire stack just because they couldn't use their words.

But also the old person thing is definitely a dexterity/shaky hands thing-- they don't want to spill their drink all over themselves and sipping from a straw is easier than keeping your cup steady up to your mouth.

We keep our straws out, but the other day a man reached over the counter for cinnamon dolce powder, as we only keep cinnamon, chocolate and Vanilla on the condiments bar

all the time. but... we keep our nitro lids next to the tap for convenience, and it’s right at handoff plane. handed off a tea to a lady the other day, smiled and said “have a great day”. i walked back to bar to finish another drink and suddenly out of the corner of my eye i see her reaching well over the handoff plane grabbing at the nitro lids and trying to separate one. we made eye contact and she stopped. i wanted to tell her she should have just asked and not done it, but my mouth stayed shut. threw out the lids and washed the plexi when she left.

We had someone do this, I let them take the lid, then went over to the lids, tossed them out IN FRONT OF HER and then put the holder in the back. She was very annoyed but I’m just glad I made my point I guess...

If I don't ask them for straws fast enough they start to reach around and grab them. It's frustrating!
