Not gonna lie its a really steep learning curve and they say it takes 6 months to get the hang of being a full fledged barista ya know? Like heck im still learning things. Ex: i didnt know u can press the ice button in the main menu after u press something that doesnt have a cold button like a flat white. This was Four months in (and yes im in Canada so no wonder i was suprised lol)
Please please dont be discouraged as this not the end all end all. If it helps i say try to be as prepared as possible. Kinda like how u d memorize what ure gonna say before u order. What i did, i took pictures of the POS and especially those hidden buttons that says seasonal drinks and toppings. So i get a better idea of where things are and how they re organized prior to my shift. I find it so helpful now because i know when the next promotions come in, i dont have to take pictures, i simply know where it would be located cuz the way they re organized.
I would also advise to take pictures of the warming and pastries. Cuz u need to be whippig those out by muscle memory and that takes time. So taking pictures help especially looking at the differemt kinds of egg whites out there. Sorry for the long text but i really would have loved this advise when i got hired. Thats all and good luck!!

and if it gets slow play around with the buttons on the register. i was about 6 months in before i realized that if someone wants two types of milk in their drink that the “add dairy” button (under milk) was for that exact purpose.

It always sucks to get negative feedback, especially when you're feeling vulnerable (and I felt vulnerable for about my first 3 months, never mind my first 3 weeks. And I had previous coffee experience, boo).
First of all, that isn't how a manager is supposed to give feedback. I've had some pretty terrible green beans, but the conversation is supposed to go like "how can I support you/your training?" It is not okay for a manager to imply that you'll be fired if you don't improve (which is how I read "not right for this job.") Starbucks has a lot of rules on what situations someone is allowed to be fired, and not being perfect on register after 3 weeks is not it.
That said, if you're anything like me, the only way to exorcise that conversation is to feel badass on register and stick it to that manager. Some advice: basically every drink and food item requires a follow up question from the register person. The most common ones are:
1. "Do you want whip cream on that?" (Frappuccinos and sweet milk based drinks) 2. "Do you want that sweetened?" (Iced teas and iced coffee) 3. "Do you want that iced or hot?" (Because customers are stupid and think you can read their minds) 4. "Do you need any room?" (Hot or iced coffee and americanos)
Anytime someone orders a drink, quickly think through those questions and see if any apply. This saves loads of misunderstandings at the bar.
For food-- most pastries require you to ask if they want it warmed.
Also, register will come much easier to you as you become more familiar with different drinks. I found the starbucks app super helpful for this-- scroll through the menu on the app during downtime to familiarize yourself with how different drinks look.
Hope this helps!

First of all, not sure how many hours you’re working but we advise 90 days before evaluating if you’ve caught on or not at my store! From what I see with green beans, it becomes clear they don’t know their recipes from the way they modify the drinks at POS. Communicating drink modifications clearly & accurately is something i notice a lot of people struggle with at at POS, & it’s normal. But IMO it is necessary to understand recipes & “standard.” Sounds like your coworkers are watching you to make sure they don’t have to make drinks twice, which we all do with green beans cause mistakes happen. (I’m constantly whispering “do they want whip?!?” @ green beans) Not a big deal. I’d say try to be really open to critique, & find a trusted coworker to ask about what exactly you’re doing & how you can improve. If I were you, I wouldn’t quit unless you hate the job. Don’t quit because you haven’t nailed it yet!

Three weeks in and you're already getting crap? I had no idea what I was doing until like 4 months in...

BTW - Unless this policy has changed without my knowledge, Starbucks does not believe in probationary periods and does not fire for performance reasons (the whole "anyone can be coached" mantra). Therefore, your SM would have a REALLY REALLY hard time getting clearance from Partner Resources to fire you because you simply aren't "getting it".

Keep trying! Maybe ask her what you need to improve on if she thinks you aren't picking it up fast enough.
