was I wrong?? (self.starbucksbaristas)

so this happened a few weeks ago. it was like a Saturday morning and this lady came through the drive thru and ordered a mango dragonfruit refresher. i tell her her total and she pulls forward.

then my DT bar tells me we’re out of dragonfruit pieces. ok no big deal, I’ll let her know at the window. so the person on bar just makes it without the dragonfruit pieces and moves on.

so the lady gets to the window and I tell her I’m really sorry but we’re out of dragonfruit pieces, but it won’t affect the taste really just the color. but apparently that is not acceptable because now she’s really mad.

she wants to get something else so I’m like ok that’s fine we’ll make you another drink. she wants a strawberry açaí lemonade so I ring it up, and because of the lemonade it’s ~20 cents extra. I tell her the new total and she starts flipping out, telling me I’m “charging her for something we don’t have,” and I don’t really know what to say so i just apologize and give her a recovery card with the drink.

later she calls the store and complains, and thankfully my ssv already knew it was kind of bullshit and didn’t hold it against me at all, but I wonder if I was wrong to charge her for the new drink. idk thoughts??

I wouldn’t have, personally, because twenty cents isn’t a big deal, especially when the store was at fault. (Not im the sense of doing anything wrong because stuff runs out and sometimes you don’t know in time, but like as opposed to the drink not being right because the customer ordered it wrong.) it doesn’t sound like she was understanding or reasonable about it, but there’s a pretty drastic visual difference between refresher with berries and refresher without berries that def throws people.

I also like that my Starbucks has a pretty loose attitude towards cost when someone purchases something we turn out not to have. It’s a nice goodwill gesture.

yeah normally I have that attitude too, I was just kind of on autopilot and wasn’t thinking too much. I ended up giving her a recovery card to try and make up for it but she didn’t seem to care 😬

I would have just charged her for the mango dragon fruit since I told her the original price, and just made the strawberry açaí lemonade... ya know, make the moment right or whatever

yeah I think normally I would have but I was just on autopilot so I tried to make up for it with the recovery card but she didn’t care :/

That isn't even make the moment right. YOU screwed up. Of all things to make someone mad about. This is the hill you choose??

Give her the drink free and give recovery card. The card isn't the first, it's the above and beyond.

Wow! They saw that they may or may have not handled that correctly. They posted it to ask opinion not be put down! Great partner attitude

i mean I wasn’t trying to piss her off or anything, I didn’t even realize there was going to be a price difference when I rang up the new drink :/

my store was out of the dragon fruit awhile ago and we told people that when they ordered to be prepared, and. they would still tell us it was the wrong drink when we tried to hand it out and then insisted on getting something else instead

that’s so annoying, everyone else that ordered it that day was totally fine with it not having the color lol just this lady was super upset about it 🤷‍♀️
