First Sip (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by AishaTun
My manager told me to come in on Monday for the first sip. How is it like ? What should I wear?
ilovebrandonj 7 points 3y ago
Be in normal dress code. It’s just to set up your info and tell you a bit about Starbucks. Usually takes just a few hours.

Is it different from onboarding ?
jljohnson1992 3 points 3y ago
It can be. On boarding is the process of getting you added to the Starbucks system (having permissions granted, partner numbers generated, etc.) Usually I start to onboard my partners before their first sip and finish with them. Mainly the first sip is talking about your role as a barista, getting to know you, introducing you to the Starbucks experience and coffee culture, and, if scheduling works out well, introducing you to your barista trainer.

Edit to define onboarding

Cool is their anything I can do beforehand to be prepared ?
jljohnson1992 2 points 3y ago
There’s not a lot to prepare for really, it’s supposed to feel really relaxed and allow for genuine connection with your SM. I suppose making sure you have an outfit that is in $1 would be really good! 😊The only things I’d really say you need to prepare are optional, like bank account and routing numbers if you want to set up direct deposit and things like that.

it'll be fun!! you'll do some paperwork and then a coffee tasting and get your apron and such, or at least that's what I did

It’s pretty laid back. It’s kind of like a meet and great. They tell you about the company in a little more detail and briefly cover you’re duties and what Starbucks does for customers and partners. You’ll also try several coffees and pastries if it was anything like mine. You won’t actually be working. It’s a lot of fun actually!

Cool and do you think my manager will let me pray. I’m muslim and I’m really scared to ask.
ImaFknWizardXII 1 points 3y ago
Legally they cannot tell you no. Now if you have to pray for 30 minutes five times a day, yeah that’s a problem. But a few moments a day for prayer shouldn’t be an issue as you’re protected by the Civil Acts Right of 1964.

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits employment discrimination based on religion. This includes refusing to accommodate an employee's sincerely held religious beliefs or practices unless the accommodation would impose an undue hardship (more than a minimal burden on operation of the business).”

Yeah probably not I might have one prayer during my shift because the times are spread throughout my day. And it takes no more than 15 minutes for me to pray.
ImaFknWizardXII 2 points 3y ago
Well it’s various from state to state but federal minimums state for every two hours you are required a 10 minute break, over 5-6 hours a 30 minute lunch. You should be fine.

That being said if you work a 8 hour shift you’ll have two ten minute breaks and a half hour lunch. Some states require a 15 minute break instead of 10.

>Now if you have to pray for 30 minutes five times a day

Muslim prayer would only interfere with the workday 3 times, as 2/5 are outside general store operational hours. The first prayer of the day is at dawn just before the sun rises and I believe the final prayer is before bed as long as it occurs after sunset and before midnight. And I saw OP noted it should only take about 15 mins which is easier to fit in, as well.

Allowing a Muslim time for prayer would fall under reasonable accommodation under the Civil Rights Act because allowing someone 10-15mins for prayer doesn't drastically reduce workplace efficiency to cause undue hardship.

I would be surprised to hear about an SM or DM risking their job to fight this request because they think slinging coffee supercedes civil rights!

i literally just did it yesterday lol. i was in a rather different outfit bc when i was told to come in, it was in between my two classes (bc i have a large break in between them), but i don’t think my manager rlly minded considering i was in school and stuff. just be casual. you also get the handbooks, coffee passport, and ig the apron and hat but i didn’t get those yet.

I just did mine and I think thats when I gave them my ID and Social secruity for paperwork purposes!
AishaTun [OP] 1 points 3y ago
I think that’s onboarding. I did all that the last time I went up there.
