hello there! i’m a starbs barista for about 2 years & am finally making the decision to look into becoming a shift! i had a developmental meeting with my manager & we’ve determined that i obviously have understanding on how to connect & bar & DT & POS & CS. i’ve got everything down perfectly.
she presented me with the challenge to COACH other baristas on ways to connect. like making sure we are getting names & greeting & really getting in touch with our customers.
i had an idea of making a little box by out handoff with the question, which barista made your day today? & then leaving some paper & pens. i think that’s cute !!
do you guys have any other suggestions or ideas ? it would be greatly appreciated!!!

My store has a lot of very shy people, so we made a signal for when we see our partners looking down/being quiet/not connecting: we point to our chin meaning "chin-up" so even if your partners are quiet they can still make eye contact and smile. You can definitely start a conversation with a customer and bring your partners into it! Or when ringing on front tell your customer "____ will have your drink ready in just a minute!" so the customer knows their name, maybe the customer can strike up conversation!

one of my favorite things that i have started doing with costumers is playing would you rather! it’s usually a fun way to connect that helps get a few laughs too. it also can help keep a conversation going when there isn’t much to talk about

We have a spread kindness box where you're SUPPOSED to leave one kind message and take a different one for yourself but everyone just leaves the baristas notes of kindness instead lmao so your idea sounds like itll work better than ours is working because people will actually do it right
