Betcha we'll stay open the whole pandemic(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by tragicalyhappy
I've had to come to work (opening mind you!) during states of emergency when the local government warned the general public to not go outside unless absolutely necessary. I bet my tips that we will stay open throughout this whole event, or at very least be one of the last ones to close.
You agree?
whatismineisyours87 points3y ago
Oh we are definitely staying open.
bedpan_383 points3y ago
I swear, since this has become more out of control the past few weeks. My store has become busier than ever. I don’t know what it is.
tragicalyhappy [OP]33 points3y ago
Yo for real, I definitely feel more fatigued after a shift than before. Our transaction rates are taking a hit but it doesn't feel like it tho.
pantyescobar16 points3y ago
for REAL though my store was breaking records last week. people are crazy
20kaisera42 points3y ago
Some lady that came through the drive through yesterday asked me if we use gloves when putting the lids on drinks and I said “no” and she goes off on how we are gonna get people sick.
Arianasagapo67 points3y ago
Gloves are no cleaner than washed hands lmfaoooo
And I’m for damn sure not changing my gloves between every other drink. She can suck my whole ass
20kaisera26 points3y ago
The reason why she asked I think was because I was wearing gloves. We were sent a paper saying we should wear gloves when handling cash. Idk why people are getting Starbucks right now period.
Arianasagapo19 points3y ago
I think they’re taking this 3rd place too far and considering it a safe haven too 😂
20kaisera7 points3y ago
We were so overwhelmed and way busier than normal today. People baffle me everyday at this job. If this stuff gets any worse I’m simply calling in and saying I’m not coming to work until further notice
crzyshiba14 points3y ago
Hahaha died at “ suck my whole ass” hahah
tragicalyhappy [OP]22 points3y ago
Did the bitch still get her drink tho? Betcha she did ತ_ತ
20kaisera25 points3y ago
Oh you betcha! And she did today as well.
tragicalyhappy [OP]14 points3y ago
┐( ˘_˘)┌ Hypocritical bitch lol
cyan_reynolds7 points3y ago
Some lady came through and was ranting to me about how she was in the medical industry and we shouldn't be touching anyone's lids and blah blah blah and I was so pissed. It was the first time I've ever had the desire to split in someone's drink, tbh.
20kaisera7 points3y ago
SHE SHOULD SIMPLY STAY HOMEEEE. Give Starbucks a reason to close their doors and keep us safe.
inconsiderateFish34 points3y ago
Yeah I'm about to quit without notice. I'm not risking my health for this place
tragicalyhappy [OP]47 points3y ago
Extreme but understable. I can't afford to miss a check personally ಥ‿ಥ
inconsiderateFish21 points3y ago
Totally understand. I'm only working ~10 hours and am a student. Good luck and take care
stagstar9 points3y ago
As someone currently considering that action, how’s your manager/coworkers take it? I’m so anxious about the idea that the idea of going to work is making me physically sick
inconsiderateFish2 points3y ago
I have a shift today. I'll go because there are no confirmed cases in my area but I'm still nervous. I have an 8 hour shift on Sunday that I'm not sure about. I might just call in until they fire me if need be
bumbabums2 points3y ago
how will they or how SHOULD they?
[deleted]10 points3y ago
I recommend double checking if your state has announced a state of emergency yet. If it has, then dont officially quit. Choose to stay at home and inform your supervisors and manager that you wont be coming in or leaving your home due to the official state of emergency.
THEN if they fire you, file for unemployment.
In the mean time search for job apps because getting a new job always takes a couple of weeks- just enligh time to wait everything out.
scrumfie8826 points3y ago
oh we for sure are not gonna close. Unless starbucks is actually told they have to close they aren't going to do it on their own. I keep joking with my regulars that the more the news covers this pandemic the more people keep showing to my store. I am waiting to just stand around with no one shows up. They just laugh, and I the hope goes out o my eyes.
tragicalyhappy [OP]16 points3y ago
Yeah not even a worldwide health crisis will cancel a happy hour ರ╭╮ರ
himynametopher25 points3y ago
I have straight up accepted the fact I will get the virus. We handle so much cash and our customers will come no matter what. Starbucks is a shit company that won’t do what is right like what Disney has done.
tragicalyhappy [OP]4 points3y ago
Yeah I've accepted my fate as well. I feel you 100%
Panik96322 points3y ago
At my store we are busy af, still runnin on 3 plans...how are expected to keep everything sanitized and do what they say we’re doing when they still won’t give us more labor?? It’s still all about some image...we can’t take your cup, but we‘ll take your cash? Gtfoutta here...
tragicalyhappy [OP]5 points3y ago
Yup, capitalism... Gotta love it..
sue23415 points3y ago
Did you not see how 90% of the stores in China are already operational again? I got an email the other day and couldn’t believe it! They will definitely work through the ENTIRE thing
tragicalyhappy [OP]5 points3y ago
No I did not, holy shit! We are definitely not closing then. Lol
marlomarhi9 points3y ago
Schools in my state were just ordered to close for three weeks so now I have coworkers who can’t get their shifts covered and have no child care :((
tragicalyhappy [OP]5 points3y ago
Oh shit, now that's a real problem! (・_・;)
Supadupastein1 points3y ago
Def no point to come in then if you have to pay for child-care. This is why you need to return to school if you don’t already have some type of degree or other advanced skill that will make you good money. Starbucks isn’t a career or something to make a life out of. It’s just unfeasible, with Murphy’s law and all, and will eventually chew you up and spit you out. You can work there for years and never even get a promotion. They don’t give a fuck about you and will fire you as soon as you don’t meet their overly rigorous and pretty much abusive standards.
Not that anyone gives a fuck, really, but the less replaceable you are the better you are treated, the more money you make, and are also able to find a new job easier. Whatever situation you’re in that you think you can’t “afford” to quit or work less hours, step back and really re-examine it. Short of your parents sucking ass and not being able to help you, and having multiple children before you should have, I see no reason to be able to give up whatever has you trapped there. Like pride to live on your own without asking for parents help, a relationship where you have your own apartment with a boyfriend/girlfriend or something. I’ve been there, done that. I had an ex-girlfriend whom never let me return to college from the time I was 21-28, and I thought our apartment and life together was the most important thing since we had a son. (Also, being 21 you’re practically still a baby, still quite fresh out of high school, but 11 short years later and you’re 14 years out of high school). We broke up, and I finally did return at 29, with my parents help. My ex and I still share custody of our son. The thing I regret most was staying with my ex-girlfriend for so long, and wasting 7 years just “working to get by” because it was “the most important thing” at the time. And going from somebody who was still practically a stupid teenager to now a true ass adult who knew I needed to change My life, NO MATTER WHAT. I refused to work shit jobs or be completely taken advantage of anymore.
I even tried to work 30-40 hours a week at Starbucks while IN school, but couldn’t handle it. I told my wife I’m quitting or working less hours no matter what. Because I have no option, and need to graduate asap, and she understood the importance. There’s ways to get money like financial aid and student loan refunds, and working during light semesters. In the long run it will be much better for me/you and is worth a temporary sacrifice. I’m very close to graduation now, at 32 years old on the 15th. I have a good gpa, and everything has been working out thanks to my family and my own hard work. I understand not everyone’s family will be as helpful as mine, or are even alive, but you’d be surprised what your parents are probably willing to do to see you succeed if they are alive.
acertwo5 points3y ago
90 percent of people could get the virus, it could mutate into an instant death effect, the government could fail to stop the spread, half the worlds population could be dead, and Starbucks would still probably be open. Don’t worry though, we still won’t be accepting personal cups.
tragicalyhappy [OP]4 points3y ago
Not gonna lie that first half of ur comment had me on edge, LMAO
ilostmypethamster5 points3y ago
:(( I used to be a barista here. Stay safe guys! Sending love and lots of tips ❤️
tragicalyhappy [OP]1 points3y ago
Always appreciate the support, thank you.
Koruam4 points3y ago
Our store is located in an office complex and it is deserted since all our regulars decided to work from home.
tragicalyhappy [OP]1 points3y ago
A lot of the offices by us have closed too, our transactions have dropped no doubt. But people still come regardless so we're fucked. Lol
Alliiicatttt3 points3y ago
From my understanding, in areas that are necessary we will be closing cafe stores. And only providing mobile orders and drive thru service until the risk lowers. And if your store closes you are welcome to pick up shifts but Starbucks employees get catastrophe pay if your store were to close. Like a leave of absence type of thing up to 26 weeks. My store is a mall store and while we continue to remain open, next week who knows. The risk is still relatively low in most areas in the US unless you living in Washington. I know California is close to declaring a state of emergency. And once that happens things will change.
moondaughtr1 points3y ago
my state has declared a state of emergency, closed all public schools for a month and universities for 2 weeks. and no talks of closing our cafe ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (I live in maryland)
siriushendrix3 points3y ago
You expect them to not make us come in with IV drip attached to us?
tragicalyhappy [OP]1 points3y ago
Which they will not provide btw. Lol
Momisnotmyname2 points3y ago
2 degrees and working on a 3rd and srill get better pay and benefits at Sbux than most jobs in my field.
Also, pur store cafe has been a ghost town between spring break and the social distanxing, but our sales are up due to our high volume drive thru.
tragicalyhappy [OP]1 points3y ago
Yea i totally believe that, as much as I hate the culture around our work there aren't too many companies that offer better alternatives (at least at the entry level).
crzyshiba2 points3y ago
Yup I’m in California and all school amusements parks are closing so what about our stores can I wear gloves?
tragicalyhappy [OP]2 points3y ago
As far as I know you can't wear gloves or masks, but ultimately corporate will trickle that information to each district depending on your areas' situation (I assume)
bubb1eb4th2 points3y ago
My location is a kiosk in a grocery store. Of course we'll stay open unless someone in the store catches the virus.
cyan_reynolds2 points3y ago
Absolutely we will. A lot of stuff in my area is closing, the local college is shutting down, and all we've done is box up our ceramic mugs. I think we should be accepting only contactless payment already, but that's probably not even in Starbucks' plan at all, tbh.
What's worse is half our partners are from the local college, and will be gone for over a month. I give my store less than a month before we all have it.
nightkat892 points3y ago
Our store is not too far from a college campus and our business flow has been so messed up. We get mini peaks in the middle of a weekday. And of course, the schedule isn’t set up for it
melanieissleepy2 points3y ago
one store near me has closed and the partners are currently taking shifts at other stores in our area :o
tragicalyhappy [OP]1 points3y ago
Oh wow! Now that's surprising. Has that area become a hot spot?
piercinginhalation2 points3y ago
they’ll stay open as long as they can make a profit point blank, and our store has not shown any signs of slowing down 🙃
arcticfury1292 points3y ago
I meannnn I don’t really want us to close cuz my rent still comes due each month
cody_18492 points3y ago
If we close because of Corvid then we get paid time off. So you still get your pay check either way.
arcticfury1294 points3y ago
I’ve heard that before but I’m haven’t seen anything from Starbucks itself to confirm something like that. I’m not sure if we would get catastrophe pay due to coronavirus. I could be wrong tho
kneecole1238 points3y ago
They just put out a statement today on the hub that we’d get disaster pay regarding coronavirus.
Alliiicatttt3 points3y ago
You won’t get confirmation unless it is actually happening.
Supadupastein1 points3y ago
And this is why our country sucks. We need some type of emergency program to help with stuff like this. Also, if you have rent but work at starbucks, I really hope it’s either a room-mate situation and you are in college. Trying to afford your own place at Starbucks and not going to college sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Things like this in life are all to common. You need more money saved up, and marketable skills.
tragicalyhappy [OP]1 points3y ago
Yo same, living that check to check life. ಥ‿ಥ

Our company does offer disaster relief, but that can be a pain to receive. You know politics and all that nonsense.

Your concern is very much appreciated! (◍•ᴗ•◍)❤ But at the end of the day Bux is a business and all that matters is profit. If they can still make money, they will stay open.
Fillupdaniel1 points3y ago
If you choose to go work during state of emergency’s then that’s on you. Your not forced to work it. If your scared of your job do what I did and found a better one.
tragicalyhappy [OP]3 points3y ago
Harsh, but you're not wrong. I see your POV. Not scared tho just need the fucking money.
Fillupdaniel2 points3y ago
I understand. But you got to think about the long term. If you get hurt then your really fucked. Then what. 😔
tragicalyhappy [OP]3 points3y ago
You're absolutely right, playing the long game is usually the smarter choice. But also remember not everyone has the same opportunities. Some can quit this shitty job easily and find something better quickly. Others don't have that luxury. It's not a black n white matter.
atvlouis1 points3y ago
To close out of precaution seems a little too crazy unless there are specific location being closed due to high outbreak in an area...
Spacerelic621 points3y ago
They closed down all the public schools around here.
