You get an unpaid 30 minute break if you are scheduled for a minimum number of hours in a day (6 I think, and a second unpaid 30 minute break if you’ve been scheduled for 9 or more hours in a day).
You should be offered a paid 10 minute break if you are scheduled for a minimum number of hours as well (I think it’s 2 hours, but everyone in my store is at least offered a 10 minute break regardless of how long they are scheduled).
Your store manager/shift shouldn’t ask you to return early from your unpaid 30 minute break ever. You certainly shouldn’t do any work without first clocking in. It isn’t okay for you to be asked to return 15 minutes early from your break due to customer load and then sent home 15 minutes early at the end of the day. Your 30 minute unpaid break should be an uninterrupted break except for in emergencies, in which case you should take note of the time so you are properly compensated for your work.
It sounds like your store was particularly busy and that your 30 minute break was essentially pushed to the last 30 minutes of your shift. If that’s the case, you still worked the same amount of hours as if you had taken your break in the middle of your shift because you aren’t paid during your 30 minute break.
I would check with your SM if I were you for clarification if this is standard procedure at your store. Occasionally partners at my store will clock out 30 minutes early in exchange for working without a lunch break, but that is only if the partner wants to leave early.
