my main job (working at a high school) shut down (self.starbucksbaristas)

Hi! So today we got news that with over 700 of our students being sick (which is over a fourth of our population) the district decided to close our school until April 6th.

I really don’t know how or if this affects me being able to work at Starbucks. I’m scheduled to work today and the whole weekend. I called my manager and he didn’t answer I texted him to let him know what was going on and even told the shift on duty tonight who I’m working with.

I really don’t know what to do because there’s something definitely going around my school with a lot of people being out sick. Is it actually the coronavirus? Probably not. But I’m not really sure what to do about it and I’m kind of worried about getting my coworkers sick after knowingly being sent home for three weeks. I don’t feel great, but I could still work, so that’s kind of where I’m at right now.

Any suggestions on what to do?

do not work. if you’ve been around sick people, you can be contagious without showing symptoms. and it sounds like you’ve been around a lot of sick people.

The manager told me that unless I had “serious symptoms like fever, diarrhea or vomiting” then I’m fine. Until then he said it doesn’t change my status with Starbucks.

I totally agree with you. A lot of people that I’ve been working with *are* sick, but I guess I just have to keep going until I get sick too????

if your school has closed because 700+ students are sick, you need to stay home. your manager is wrong and only wants you to come in to make coverage easier. you are not required to come in. your manager cannot make you. you won’t get fired.
