When someone has to call out, is it their job to find coverage?
My mom has said multiple times that if you have to call out, it’s managements job to find coverage. She gets angry with my store when I’m sick, or when there’s a medical emergency and I have to run around like a headless chicken begging anyone in the store to take my shift because I literally can’t come in.
Everyone at my store is expected to find someone to cover them if they can’t come in, otherwise they have to come in. We’ve had partners come in very sick because no one could cover them, which just shouldn’t be allowed.

Management's job, not yours. While it's a courtesy to help find coverage, it's not your responsibility. $1 will elaborate.

It depends on the nature of the callout.
If you are sick, it is only your responsibility to notify the store ASAP that you are sick and can't come in.
If you have jury duty you just have to notify the store that you got called for jury duty, and they'll find coverage.
In most other circumstances it is your responsibility to find coverage. I.e. you had a last minute schedule conflict, or you want to take the night off to study for a test.
(above is corporate store policy, licensed stores may have a different policy, though most states have laws protect sick workers from being penalized for being sick)

I work at a license store. We don’t have to find replacements. The ones that work handle the extra work. I am at a university that makes 2000 drinks a day. We get a sick call on a daily basis. We are used to it and prioritize so I would hope your store can do the same thing

The thing with this is it's TECHNICALLY a grey area. We aren't MANDATED to find our coverage, the policy if i remember correctly is that you're efforts to find coverage are to assist nothing more. Its so that when u do finally call out you can say you tried store x,y,z so they would ask stores A,B,C instead. So while its not mandatory the company has it pretty engrained into partner thinking it is.

Not for medical emergencies and if you need to take care of someone under 18. I was literally reading the labor law signs in my store today because we were so slow. It should be posted in the back.
