Because our store hasn’t closed down yet, I’m taking a leave of absence.(self.starbucksbaristas)

I’m not putting my partners, friends, and family members, some of whom COVID can be fatal to. I couldn’t live with myself if I did. One barista has called out because of flu like symptoms but there’s no confirmation and another partner lives with someone who has the full blown “flu” but who knows if it’s actually COVID. We’re already closing cafe but still able to take orders, just can’t sit down. Our store is off a busy highway that many people come from in a city that has a lot of cases. My assistant manager has told me that I should file a leave of absence. I just left a voicemail telling them to contact me back about sending info to confirm it.
Why can’t we just shut the stores down already? I shouldn’t have to take a leave of absence. A smart decision would be to shut down all the stores, limit exposure, wait for this all to pass, take a small hit now instead of paying more for it in the long run, so we can get back to work faster? Be more preventative than reactionary?

I am shaking with hurt, anger, fear, and a deep sense of betrayal. I watch the bosses just congratulating each other for how this is the best response ever. They sound EXACTLY like the fraud in the WhiteHouse peddling happy talk. Do they believe it? I think they do. Which should terrify everyone. There is no adult at the wheel. We have toddlers drunk in sugar driving our bus towards a cliff. You are not wrong.

I gave away all my shifts this week. I live with two elderly grandparents who are already sick as it is. Covid could be fatal. I had flu like symptoms last week and still got forced to come it, but walked out halfway through my shift because I just couldn't deal with it. I called the covid line today and they're going to mail documentation to me for what the disaster pay covers. I'm getting over the actual flu but I'm fine now. I'm just SO SO SO SCARED for my grandparents. If I contracted it, and they caught it, I would never be able to live with myself. 2 weeks without pay and a bit of credit card debt never hurt anyone right.... Right?!??

That’s crazy. I’m sorry friend and I’m right there with you. It’s just terrible all around. I just want everyone else to be ok. 😞

AND I have not gotten a person to answer partner support in 5 tries today after a partner infection occurred outside the store.

I’m doing the same and filing a leave of absence but the judgement I got for “being scared” when I’m only trying to protect myself, my family, and hopefully others was surprising :/ is it that hard to understand how these kinds of things spread ahaha

Asthmatic partner here, also scared. Hoping my county will close all nonessential by the time I have work on Thursday. Talked to my store manager today, told us to go get tested. Hospital in my city has a tent up but no testing. Testing is being done in a city with a “shelter in place” issued... so like .... ha ha..
Plus I feel ridiculous getting tested, getting a negative result, going to work and catching it.
What would be the point of that.
Shut the doors for a week let this simmer down a little. Ugh.
But what do I know ?

My city closed all non essential businesses today but we’re staying open. Technically by getting rid of seating, and the fact that we take mobile orders we aren’t considered non-essential. It’s ridiculous
They should have already closed store to prevent partners from getting sick, that way we could hopefully open again in 2 weeks or so (like everyone else is doing). Now it’s more likely everyone is going to get sick bc they were forced to work and in a week or so who will be working??? If any of our closers have it the rest of us are definitely sick so

Ridiculous. I really hope things are just feeling sort of out of proportion right now and this just kinda passes by. I don’t know. Good luck.

Sorry, that’s a really confusing situation, I don’t know where you are but today I heard quite a bit of the company video conference call giving stores in Washington state permission to close, any store manager in Washington state who does not feel it is safe for their store to be open may close it was a video conference call and it sounded like they did not expect anyone in the country especially densely populated areas to keep their doors open the impression I got from that was that disaster pay would extend to the partners of any store that has the need to close especially but not exclusively in Washington state. Double check, and take them at their word if you believe your partners or customers are at risk and need to close Starbucks should honor that decision, in the United States our testing is just too slow we cannot wait on those tests. I don’t see why you should have to take a LOA They were definitely talking to all SMs and they really did sound serious about being safe they said partners who had or lived with people who had a higher risk were not expected to work
