In my area, some stores are not closing because partners don’t know what they’ll do if they get quarantined, so the higher ups are making the decision to stay open. Some partners also don’t want to close stores because they need to get paid, and for now Starbucks is not offering catastrophe pay unless you’re infected. You can choose to not go in to work if you are concerned you’ll get infected, and you can use your sick or vacation time if you want to get paid something, otherwise no money for you. If you need hours, you need to find yourself a store to get hours. We got told that Starbucks decision to stay open is to keep a normalcy and routine for customers and to make the moment right for them in this crisis. This completely baffles me. They are claiming the CDC is letting them stay open as an essential business. They are not offering any support financially besides the CUP Fund. Dear lord, what is this dystopian bullshit.

this is how they dismantle what we’ve been trying to accomplish. stores shouldn’t be open and partners shouldn’t feel like they have to risk exposure to get a paycheck but now they’ve made it a “choice” for partners to come in – people with money get choices. this is taking advantage of the poor in a time of crisis.

fuck the normalcy of the customers this is a pandemic - an international emergency, normal is GONE and it won’t be back for a long time and people need to accept that rather than keep trying to order matcha frappuccinos. this is hard on *everyone* but the lockdowns and quarantines are for a *reason*

“This is taking advantage of the poor in a time of crisis.” THIS. 100% THIS!

“Essential.” Gas stations, which pretty much have to stay open, most times sell coffee for 1/3 the price. And anyone who is so reliant on caffeine as to consider it a necessity needs help.
