Feeling stuck and scared (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by i_only_eat_handsome
So I actually really like my barista job. I get benefits, my school is paid for (via ASU), and I get to work a schedule that is good for me and my sick dad. But at this point I am dreading going to work. Not because of anything that I may catch but because my father is immunocompromised. I take care of him and take him to his doctors appointments that he can not miss even when going to the hospital is dangerous. I feel like being at work (which is where I am I’m at right now) is actually dangerous for my dad. But I need to be able to pay my bills and I don’t have the option to work from home obviously. It’s just really scary and I’m not sure what to do.

Catastrophe pay has supposedly been expanded so that if you live with/take care of someone at risk you can receive it. You should try and get it if you can

Thank you for that information! I will be looking into it.

The way my SM expalined it there should be no reason why you dont get it.

He told me partners could use just because they dont feel safe going to work anymore.

His only warning was once you use up the 2 weeks or whatever, that's it, and if the store later closed or anything you'd have to dip into sick/vacation time.

I'm absolutely not trying to talk you out of it, of course, do what you have to do for you and yours, I'm just putting that out there so you know.

Good luck dude, stay safe.

I relate to so much of this. I just feel so betrayed by the company I love. I don't know what to do. I wish I had answers for you. I'm afraid that filing for a leave of absence will take away my SCAP benefits.

That’s how I feel too. I really am relying on SCAP. It’s the reason I took this job and I can’t lose it.
