I see a lot of posts about quitting. Please DON'T QUIT. Make them pay you first. (self.starbucksbaristas)

If you feel unsafe to work, contact your manager (texting is proof in writing) and tell them you feel unsafe to work and will be using sick leave/vacation time and not be coming in. DO NOT QUIT AND LET THEM KEEP YOUR MONEY. Make them pay you what they owe you first.

Even if you do not have sick leave, inform them you will not be in BECAUSE YOU DON'T FEEL SAFE. If you are willing to quit, you are willing to not be paid to not work there. This has the same results, but keeps you as a partner putting your voice in beside ours that we don't feel safe.

Maintain politeness. Give them no reason to fire you other than saying you didn't feel safe. If enough people do this, how bad would it look for them to fire that many people who didn't feel safe?

Don't quit. Use your voice to support those without that option.

If we do that can we just come back in whenever we want? Can we really just not come in because we don’t feel safe? I’ve seen people saying to do this but I’m still confused on how to go about it.

Step one would be, if your manager hasn't directly said you can, do so in a text message. You want a record for if they take action against you to possibly prove worker's rights violations.

If you ask to use sick leave or call in feeling unwell at least 2 hours before your shift, the employee handbook states you are not responsible for finding coverage. If they try to force you to come in, contact partner ethics.

If everything goes sideways, go to the media. I legitimately don't care if they think it is acceptable. Some store managers do, some don't. If yours does, just assert your discomfort and you're fine. If they aren't willing to do so, raise hell. Coranavirus is on nonstop in the media cycle and there are plenty of media outlets that would love to take Starbucks down a few pegs.

At the end of the day, this job isn't worth it if it won't accept your fears in a national state of emergency. So many companies promised less and did more. Starbucks promised more and did less. If you're more afraid of asserting yourself and forcing the issue than you are of the epidemic, I won't judge you, but you should really think about what that says about your employer that you fear them more than a literal pandemic.

my manager messaged us all today and we wont be closing our store... i’m so angry i have had too many bad experiences already. i had a customer lick their finger and hand me some money. honestly disgusting.

Document what you can and raise concerns. Things are getting real and heavy. There is talks of unionizing or a class action lawsuit. Do what is right for your safety and those around you and document everything. Use texts and emails for a paper trial. Call PCC and let them know how you feel and apply for paid crisis leave. If they reject you, document the rejection. Don't let them boss is around and risk our lives whole they quarantine and stay safe.

thank you, it’s really concerning at my store. my boss is dismissing a lot of the risk and saying how the mortality rate is low, only affects a small minority of people and business should run as normal (seating area has been minimised, only paper cups, no condiment bar, no personal cups) but our franchise owners want to keep profits and not close. sad times,m
awkward_ambivert 2 points 3y ago
the fact that the mortality rate is low is not a reason to stay open!! people are not panicking because of the mortality rate, they're panicking because it's very contagious and also pretty dangerous to vulnerable populations

I'm sorry. Wear gloves for your safety even though it will still spread between customers. Take care of yourself

also i don’t know if anyone rly cares ab this but since starbucks stock is so down, it’s a horrible time to cash in your bean stock

If you really can't come in and have no sick time and they're not closing your store you can call partner resource center and request a leave of absense. This allows you to remain an employee and keep that in with the company
chateauduchat 3 points 3y ago
That’s what I’m trying to do, although I really felt like I had no other choice. It’s for 30 days and I can’t use it again for 3 years. What a mess.
JustForBrowsing 2 points 3y ago
Wtf this will be longer than 30 days
chateauduchat 1 points 3y ago
That’s what it’s looking like. I may just leave the company if that’s the case...
JustForBrowsing 3 points 3y ago
Keep on your manager and partner resource center about what they're doing to keep you safe and/or close. If cases in your area are getting worse let them know every time an update occurs because it's "up to them to make the call" so it's total BS but you need to convince them. Sorry Starbucks is such shit especially right now but take your health and safety as top priority.

As I said, physically leave, but don't quit. Be polite and force them to kick you out for not feeling safe. Quitting also makes collecting unemployment more difficult. Research your area's unemployment rules to see what they say about this.
