what do i do (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by lindsayafton
hey all! so... let me explain my situation.
i wasn’t concerned with working because all the cases of corona in my state (without giving away too much about my exact location, arizona) were across the phoenix valley from me. i’ve been washing my hands as much as possible. but there are two cases now literally less than 10 miles from my house and my work. it would be so easy for someone to come to my store without knowing they had corona and infect me. and i have really bad anxiety, so i’m starting to get kinda scared. i think all stores should close and give pay to their partners, but i don’t think it’ll happen. i’m scared of taking my catastrophe pay now, though, because it could get worse. plus i’m super new (287****.... that new) so i wanna seem like a team player, but i just...... don’t know anymore. i’m scared and i don’t know what to do. any advice? sorry this rant is all over the place.

also to clarify, telling me to just take my catastrophe pay isn’t super helpful lmao i know y’all wanna rebel against this company but i’m super new and i really enjoy the job atm so i don’t wanna do anything to jeopardize it.

The managers would not be allowed to retaliate against you, so no worries about that. Talk with your SM about how you're feeling and be honest about it. If you're scared, you're scared and that's fine. New or not, it doesn't matter. You need to put yourself first, that's what the opportunity is there for.

If it helps, I'm a 243xxxx shift supervisor and I took this catastrophe pay starting today. I've had a fever and otherwise haven't felt well, I have a history of high anxiety and panic attacks, I've been sick already 3 times this year, and I'm scared of getting sick because I live by myself and my closest family is 1700 miles away. All I said was I have a fever and I don't feel safe or comfortable coming in to work and that's all they needed. I was granted the leave. You've just gotta communicate.

No worries, and thank you. Just communicate though! All managers are different and if you feel like you need to, call the PCC first and explain your situation and ask them for advise on how to guide your conversation. Their number is 888-728-9411.

thank you so so much!! i’m gonna wait for the cases near me to be confirmed and then i’ll probably bring it up if i’m still feeling unsafe. sometimes my anxiety just spikes, but sometimes it’s a genuine gut feeling.
