just a thought (self.starbucksbaristas)

i’ve heard a lot of sm’s saying things along the lines of “we have to stay open so we can help provide comfort/a third place to our customers during this time of panic!”

and to that i ask, why should i have to risk MY health/life and the health of my family to do that? wouldn’t being at home, healthy and distanced and safe, be more comforting and helpful to baristas and customers alike?

this shit is really starting to stress me out. like way more than before.

that is all. thank you for listening.

my SM says the same type of thing.

we had someone break down crying in the back for like 10 min then when they came back we were trying to cheer them up and our SM came over and said some shit like "i love the conversations that WE'RE having BACK HERE but we need to make sure WE'RE including customers and making those connections because we don't know what they're going through and this is a hard time for them."

Sorry not sorry but those SMs are pieces of shit for not letting y’all take some time for yourselves. Fck that tbh. I believe in karma and it’s coming for them. I hope you and your partners are okay. Sending love from NY!

what about what I am going through?? and how this is also a hard time for me???? and my family?? like i’m sorry but baristas and customers are not two separate groups of people. we are all humans experiencing the same crisis. the only difference is that baristas are forced into still working while customers are mostly people who are allowed to stay home from their jobs

That's some bullshit.

Just imagine the collective caffeine withdrawl our customers will have if we close our stores! I, for one, will not risk the slew of angry, easily irritated, irate regulars yelling at me due to the long wait because we've been closed for 24 hours! /s

Seriously though, I hope we do close for an extended period of time for our own health and safety.

Y'know what would provide ME comfort and a third place? My fucking home and good health because I don't have coronavirus that I would otherwise contract from interacting with the masses...

Lol my SM definitely didn't say anything like this. We know what it is here in California, and not one of us in my store were thinking of Starbucks as a third place. My SM addressed these concerns directly and realistically with one or two options for us to choose from.

Also, I think it's worth it to note, that while some people work at Starbucks and don't necessarily need the money, others do. So prolonging the stores being open, here at least, means that you have partners who can still pay their rent, make car payments, etc.

This company can more than afford to close and still pay its employees. Their only concern now is the stock buyback, not us.

$1

$1

Yes but the problem is they are offering disaster/catastrophe pay, but people are not going to get paid for hours they're not scheduled. That's why it's only 2 weeks worth of it as far as I know.

Also, it'd be upwards of $10 mil. just to pay thousands of SMs alone for a couple weeks. Increase that by the thousands of baristas and shifts and add the factor of no money coming in for the company, I imagine that the company would easily go bankrupt if they followed that course of action.

Edit: When the opportunity was presented for the partners in my store to take catastrophe pay given their avg. hrs, only one partner in my store is actually taking it.

i understand people need money to pay bills. i do too. but i also know that i won’t be able to afford treatment if i catch this virus, and the medical bills would put me into far into debt. i also know the company could continue to pay us. additional resources should be provided. catching the virus could be literally deadly for some of us. i think it’s dangerously inconsiderate to not even be thinking about that.

Oh I'm absolutely considering that, but I'm also considering the amount of people who have recovered, both young and old here in the US and globally as well. Assuming you live with other people who are all self-isolating, then sure.

Idk man. I just feel that everyone's situation is different, and not everyone wants the same things. People are going to get shorted in any of these situations. I mean this can be said for people who need the money, people who don't, those who are immunocompromised, those who are in school, etc. Outside of reading posts in this subreddit, I actually don't know any baristas who are not wanting to work with the exception of one (not due to health reasons). This is actually the first I've heard of baristas feeling this way 🤷🏿‍♀️

Edit: I'm assuming that you're immunocompromised in some way based on your response.

I had a full on anxiety attack yesterday and had to take an anxiety medication to help it, I’m not ok!! We are NOT OK

This is exactly why I called out to self quarantine. Partners were coming in with symptoms because they needed the money and my manager saw no problem with coming in with a sore throat and a cough. If they want to stay open and be a center for this thing to spread then go for it. I’ll be safe at home thank you.

hello again guys. i guess all i’m trying to say is baristas should have more of a choice here. at the moment, our only two options seem to be to keep working and risk getting sick, or stay home and not be able to pay our bills. neither of which is okay. bc then of course that leads to sick people coming into work bc they don’t have much of a choice.

there should be more resources available to us, so we can help ourselves, each other, and our customers stay safe and healthy. neither of the options we have now are viable considering the state of the world rn and and the predicted direction of things.
