Throwaway account because I do not want to get fired.
Ok I don’t work at Starbucks. I work at a similar drive thru chain coffee / tea shop that’s only on the west coast(?) I live in CA and the governor just ordered us to stay inside and only essential businesses will be open. The list of essentials that they gave us said nothing about coffee, yet whoever’s in charge of this company is finding any little reason to stay open. We work with hundreds of customers a day, and we even go outside to take their order in the drive thru, like chick fil a did. This is still going on and it’s gross. They keep assuring us (with cheery happy videos) that they are doing everything they can to ensure our safety, and that they will close if they get ordered to. Which... um... should’ve been the case after this shelter in place for CA. But no. And apparently they need to be ORDERED to care about their employees. Tons of other companies closed with pay to their employees without anyone “telling them to” because they give a fuck. This company preaches about how much they care about their baristas and everyone is in love with this company and their job. Don’t get me wrong it’s a fun job and I never hate coming in to work but this situation showed their true colors. They won’t put the workers or customers safety before their money it seems like. This isn’t talked about amongst me or my coworkers because like I said “the job is so fun! We have to like every thing about the company!” (Yeah whatever) so I don’t really have anyone on the same page as me.

They also said “well if you simply don’t feel comfortable coming in to work we can’t pay you” Ok? But you should close with pay. So everyone at every store can be safe. It’s so frustrating. I have to choose between money and my health. Fuck off greedy bastards. I completely feel for Starbucks. I don’t even know what the hell I’m supposed to do.

(Literally have no one else to rant to. My parents already heard enough haha)

All of these coffee shops staying open, especially in areas with the most restrictions put in place only care about money. Starbucks can definitely afford to close and pay their employees. Here in Philadelphia, there are several local places that have closed and can't afford to pay their employees and so have set up online fundraisers for them. These big corporations are so evil. We need to organize everywhere and demand that these multi-billion dollar corporations close and pay their employees.
