My wife got fired 24 hours before the COV paid leave!(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Phuein
I can't help but feel this is no coincidence. They quickly terminated her with an excuse and without any warning or discussion. She was a shift supervisor and **a hard worker**. She worked at her store even after COV warnings were made public!
She is shocked and upset. Starbucks is saving a few dollars by firing her right before the COV paid leave announcement. And now we're going to live during the quarantine with much less income and a lot of fear and uncertainty.
Did you get fired right before the announcement? Do you know someone who got fired too?
I'm curious to know how much of a systematic money-grabbing corporate move this may be.
Thank you
EDIT: Just to clarify, she got termination papers with a reason. But it was just too much of a coincidence, and happened quickly "right on time" to miss the COV leave pay. Otherwise, she was a hard working and reliable employee with many recommendations from her coworkers.

From my understanding, not many people if any, knew about the paid leave 24 hours before hand. I’m really thinking it was just a bad coincidence.

They didn't know they were going to do it 24 hours before. It happened as they became aware of conditions and developments. It was a quick decision based on partner protection, customer protection, and brand protection. There is no broad conspiracy. There are mean store managers ... who fired her exactly? What was the circumstance?

The managers found out about the paid leave at the same time as everyone else. What was the reason on her papers? Honestly it is REALLY hard to get fired from Starbucks. They have to have multiple pieces of documented coaching UNLESS they have proof of theft. That includes taking home expired food and giving away free coffees to family and friends.

Store managers nor dms knew about the pay 24 hours before it was announced.

Facts.

It's unlike Starbucks to terminate employment without cause or paperwork.
Either the facts aren't being fully explained or a call to PRSC is needed to have a specialist review the situation.

Edited to clarify that she did get a cause and paperwork. The whole scenario still didn't make sense and was timed very specifically.
yyz_barista1 points3y ago
The timing depends on the reason for seperation, certain reasons require multiple written warnings before seperation can occur (ie. Being late or poor performance) while other reasons can result in termination without prior warning (ie. Theft).
Depending on the reason, it may just be bad timing but termination can be permitted. Otherwise if due process wasn't followed, then escalation to the PRSC remains available.
Without knowing the reason it's hard to say if proper process was followed. If theft of any kind occured then termination should've been done as soon as it came to light, even if it was before the announcement. Even if they wanted to, they can terminated individuals while on leave.

I’ll just say (and I know this is going to be a downvote magnet) that from the perspective of Starbucks upper management, even if they did know catastrophe pay was coming, why wouldn’t they fire her? I’m not saying it isn’t shitty to do because how do you get another job right now? But if I knew I was going to fire an employee for whatever reason, why wouldn’t I expedite the process a bit and cut them loose before being forced to pay them for 30 days? Why lose hundreds or even thousands on an employee I don’t intend to keep?
Again, I know it is super shitty. It sucks to be fired during a crisis! But it sounds like you believe the reason was valid enough, just the timing sucked. File for unemployment and move on. Getting fired from Starbucks is no great loss in the big picture.

That is so messed up. What was their reasoning for firing her?
This is why we need to unionize. It's horrible that any of us can be fired for some little mistake, or even something completely made up.
I don't want to share identifying details, but it was really surprising that Starbucks did not stand with her in a difficult situation inside the store. She was just used as a scapegoat and kicked out, without any discussion or anything.
PhillyBaristaJustice2 points3y ago
Yeah that sounds about right. They'll do anything to avoid the blame for what is really their fault. Corporate gives almost no support to us at a store level. That's the main reason I refused when I was asked to become a SSV.
